looking to buy another truck and looked at an 03'mack with a 427. was wondering how strong they were? we had an older R series mack with a 283 and it would pull with our international that is suppose to be 370... i would like for the truck to be able to hang with our c-15's but i figured it wouldn't.

It won't hang with a C 15. We have a 03 with a 427, they don't have any low end you have to keep it screaming to go anywhere. We have a C 12 in a pete that will out run it. I think our 427 could do a lot better than it does, it was a Ryder truck so its probably turned way down. Havn't gotten around to getting someone to hook a computer up to it yet.

This isn't the same old Mack. A friend of mine has an 02 with a 460 and Mack 18 sod. It is not a puller either. The c15 and isx will out pull and use less fuel than his. His rear end ratio is 4.?? Against my 3.55s. Seems to have a lot of sensor issues to.

We went from the old 400 E-7 to a 427. We still have the E-7 around and it will run right with the 427. We thought ours was down on power also so we had it hooked up to the computer to make sure it was set at the correct HP and it was. Doesn't make it a bad engine, just have to know that it isn't a 500 Cummins or 500 Detroit.

I guess their like anything , some are better than others . I have one setting here now that runs good with an 8 spd ,good ride also . If you want it to run with a C 15 , it should as long as your not a high hp one .  The newer engines are not like the old macks where a 300 could hang with a 425 most anytime .

I have same experience as padave. Low end doesn't seem to be there and got to wind it out. I have to have ours put on a computer also because I think it may be detuned. The 10 gears are not enough for me. Drove a couple of CAT/13 speeds this fall that would put my Mack to shame. I actually hope it's been detuned so we can squeeze the potential out of it. Joe

We had one, didn't hang around long. Broken crank and a host of fuel/electrical/injector issues. Replaced with IH with S 60 12L
