Takes a lot of work to change, different casting etc., it can be done, approx. $3,000. Contact your JD dealer.

Sunnyside, WA | I had one in my 8110 and switched it back to the regular large 1 3/4" 1000 only. If you mainly use only the large shaft, it seems to have a lot of slop. Our 8110 is a tmr tractor, so its 100% pto use. I have thought about putting it in the 8300 just to have 540 and that tractor does almost no pto work.

Yes it can be done. You drain the hydraulic oil, remove the pto shield, remove the bolts holding the pto housing to the back of the differential case and remove the pto out of the tractor. The pto speed sensor will need to be relocated also. If you are going from large 1000 to the combo unit then the speed sensor moves from the right side of the differential case by the hydraulic filter to the bottom of the pto on the back of the tractor. Usually if you can find a tractor with one on then you can trade with the dealer and have them switch it. It is fairly simple to do. There is not a gasket used on the housing but sealer is needed. The convertabe small 1000/500/large 1000 unit is more sloppy in the large 1000 setting because the large 1000 shaft isn't as long and is just a stub shaft held in with a snap ring.

Mid-East Nebraska | Tractor not equipped with optional 540/1000 RPM PTO drive. The 540/1000 RPM optional PTO drive is a factory only installed option. There are three (3) ways to equip a tractor with optional PTO. OPTION NO. I Optional PTO design is interchangeable with the standard 1 3/4 in. -1000 rpm design. They can be swapped between any 80X0 wheel and track tractor. Note: On wheel tractors the harness will reach both PTO speed sensor locations. OPTION NO. II Order optional 1 3/4 in.-1000, 1 3/8 in.-1000, and 1/3/8in.-540 rpm power take off order code #2420 on a tractor being ordered by your dealership and swap assemblies as in option I above. IMPORTANT: Use the 1 3/8 in. 540 rpm PTO shaft only on implements requiring less than 75 PTO horsepower. Use the 1 3/8 in. -1000 rpm PTO shaft only on implements requiring 150 PTO horsepower. Use the 1 3/8 in. -540 and 1000 rpm option for light-duty farm use only. Either option is not intended to transmit full engine power. Use the 1 3/4in.-1000 rpm PTO shaft if heavier loads are expected. OPTION NO. III Use the attached parts listings to order the individual parts needed to build and install the 540/1000 rpm optional design on any 80X0 tractor. Note: This installation will cost more due to individual parts costs and labor incurred in ordering and assembly of parts. Complete assembly and installation of parts per Repair Manual TM 1575. TRACK TRACTORS: PTO OPTION NOT AVAILUABLE FROM THE FACTORY: The 540/1000 rpm optional PTO design can be installed on the track tractors by using options I, II, and III. The speed sensor harness will have to be spliced to extend to the rear PTO sensor location on the tractor.
