I have two M11's.....a 1996 International 9200 and a 1998 International 9200 and they have both been very economical to run and very trouble free. Both are 360 horsepower engines.

I've got one in a '95 Freightliner w/ a 34' hopper. It's a light outfit and handles 925 bu. of corn (legal) just fine. It came as a 350 horse and with a poke of the computer I went to 370. Later engines can go a little higher. If I was hauling 80K with some hills I'd probably prefer an N14 but for what I do it's all I need. Kevin

We are having trouble with our 96 model M11 in a Pete 377. The stop engine light comes on and you can't get any rpms out of it. But if you step the throttle down a bunch of times the engine come off of idle and the stop engine light comes off. But as soon as it idles down the light comes back on and you have to repeat the same thing over. Any body have any ideas?

The potentiometer on the foot pedal sounds like a good candidate.

The M11 is or was the electronic injection system engine that replaces the mechanical L10. They added one liter of displacement and all the computer controlled injection system to meet required emissions standards of the day.

Here is Cummins marketing line, "M11 Series: Advanced electronics coupled with a proven engine design produce outstanding engine performance for the M11, higher fuel efficiency and reduced downtime through digital engine diagnostics. The Cummins M11 Series ranges from 280 to 400 horsepower. "

Joey, how are things in Castroville? All corn cut yet? Dried out from all the rain a few weeks ago yet or did Castroville miss it?

We have 10 of them in FLD 112's.  Pulling tenders, sidedumps, and a few loads of corn out in and out of fields.  If you are hilly you would need more motor.    Nothing major on ours, just some leaks and one has had ECM problems.  Got two Red top 400's and some 370's and 350's.

97 Volvo has M11 and pulls fine. Most of my driving is on flat land with a few little hills and I average 90k per load @ 65mph. I had to replace the oil pressure sensor and a crankshaft sensor, nothing major in expenses but an inconvience when your dead on the side of the road.

Subject: Horse vs. Pony

Arva, Ontario

Mark,

I pull livestock for an outfit that buys many of their power units from a fleet. Ergo, they are fleet spec'd, and often identical.

About 8 years ago, we had two identical FL120's (97 models?)with the exception of power-plants; one with a N14, the other with a M11. Both had 13 speeds, same rear ratios, and 22.5 rubber. They would both run 55mph @ 1500 in 12th.

Our weights are usually in the 80-90K bracket (80 in the US, and we're allowed 87K here in Ontario).

Bottom line, to run 100 kmh (62mph) in Ontario and most US states, I'd run in 13th @ ~1500 on cruise. Long trips down to Indiana, I'd clear customs/USDA, I'd set the cruise and relax for a couple of hours, unless I had the M11. It may have been rated the same HP as the N14 (370), but only in some Cummins engineer's dreams. We suggested that the N14 had 370 horsepower, and the M11 had 370 ponypower. There was no comparison in terms of lugging. Often, when loaded, we'd end up running the M11 @ 1700 in 12th to navigate undulating territory, and occasionally it wouldn't hold speed coming home empty.

The owner of the fleet had said that they'd experienced the same thing. Net/net, I think there was 600 lbs difference in weight (and payload), but fuel economy was about identical because the M11 had to run spooled up more often to hold speed. Their fleet speed was 55, and they often couldn't hold that if you said the word 'grade'. Even though there was a slight positive bottom line to this engine in his application, he couldn't get anyone to willingly drive them. The same also applied to our outfit as well; the M11 took more effort to operate, and was louder in the cab.

If this is to be used for short hauls out of the field, and some 30-60 mile trips to an end-user, it might be OK. Unless it is somewhat discounted to a N14, I'd leave it. The N14 will run easier, not consume anymore fuel, and be cheaper to fix in the long-run.

My Opinion,

Luke    aka Ken SWOnt

we replaced the potentiometer in the foot speed last fall. But today I was gonna hook that trailer up to another truck. Well the light was on right away getting it out of the shed. But I noticed that the diagnostics switch was on. So I turned it off and the light stayed on. well I unhooked the trailer and as the fifth wheel was coming out from under the trailer i stepped on the pedal and bam she took off and the light came off. Made two trips with it today and only once the light came on. All i did then was stepped the throttle down a couple time and the light came off.
