Subject: Case 580D

N/E Iowa
A local farmer has a 580D backhoe for sale, one owner, low hour (2,900hr). No extras.... No four wheel drive, no extendahoe, no heat or air, paint, tires, and overall apperance looks good, pins seem pretty tight, one small oil leak, and two stick controls.
What are some of the "bad" about the (D) or are they a pretty good machine? Would like a (k) but the price is right on this (d). Will be used on fixing tile, digging rock, and small tree clearing. Thanks for any replies.

I am spoiled

really like the extendahoe and 4 wd

but for less the $7000 I 'd think of giving up some of the luxuries

Would a clean one (D) bring $12,000.00....... Or more? Trying to stay around $20,000.00 or less, due to only using it sparingly around the farm..

I would think a clean D would not bring much more than 10. We have a D and I think we payed around 7 for it, but I would not have classified it as "clean" I would tend to try to find the 4wd with C/H/A for close to 20. I "think" it could be done. Just my opinion!

Price is OK. But, if you're planning to use it in the winter for snow removal or other loader work I wouldn't want one w/o a cab. Our 580E isn't a 4WD or extendahoe and we get along fine with it. Does this have the Case engine? I would much prefer the Cummins.

Yep case motor, and yes i would rather have a cummins also . It has a cab, the heat don't work, so snow removal is out of the question. Is it a must to have MFD when moving snow? I would think the hoe would weight down the rear to give it much needed traction.

580D was a good hoe. D was Case motor, E was cummins motor, K went to the new style cast boom, Super K went to the electric clutch controls. MFD became available either on the K or Super K. With those hours, it should have plenty of life left in it. We just got done renting a Super K 2wd to do some footer work around Dad's house, and when it was greasy, it didn't get around good at all, MFD would be nice for getting around in soft fields for tile work, but, if the money was right, on a hoe with that low of hours, it just might be worth a shot.

Oh, and you can add heat pretty easy.

Thanks profarmer! If this doesn't fall through i might take a shot at a (k) more money...... But cummins, and MFD. Is worth the headaches down the road

I have had a 580 c for 20 years. It is the most usefull thing around the farm. The heat can be fixed. The thing that stopped mine one time was mud daubers . Easy to clen out or may have to replace water hose.

I just bought last week a 1988 Case 580K e-hoe, 4wd, heat 6000hrs for $15000, seems you should be able to do better on the price or start shopping around , it does have pretty low hours though which would be appealing

Other than tractor house, what other web sites are you farmers using to find good used one's? It seem's to me that i find one but it's 3 or 4 states away..... Kinda turns me off. Like to find one somewhat close. (N/E Iowa) Went to a farm sae weeks back, and there was a case 580 super K (loaded) a couple of us standing there thought 30,000.00 maybe 35,000.00........ $41,750.00!!!!!!! And it had dented hood, bald tires, and a bent4 - 1 bucket that needed fixing. CRAZY.

Keep in mind the newer cheaper machines are usually wore out and they are NOT cheap to rebush! Their is nothing wrong with a D IMO and honestly if a farmer owned it and with those hours I doubt its broke in yet! I have a '96 Super L with 4x4, e-hoe, cab and paid $28k for it.............I would have bought an older one but couldn't find a nice one.........Mine has low wear but if I was you I'd look at the D very hard.

It will push snow no problems with just 2wd...........Actually with chains on, probably better than a 4x4 without in my experiences.

We got a 580 Super E a year ago July. It's been a fantastic purchase. It's a about an '85-'86 model with the Cummins and 5300 hours. Paid $12,500 for it.

The D will be fine. You'll probably have to put some hydraulic seal kits in.

Figuring $75/hour hiring a backhoe, we've nearly paid for the E in about a year and a half. We've put about 125 hours on it since purchase.

Got more to do.

It'd be nice to have a cab in the winter, maybe the heat can be fixed or retrofitted.

I think that's a lot for a 2Wd 580D... That is nearing 30 years of age you know... 20K will most often get you 4WD, E-hoe and 15 years newer... Not saying there's anything wrong with a D, but I'd want it under 10 and closer to 7K I think unless it was really, really nice.
Keep in mind that the Nippo starters that some of those things had were not the greatest and they're bloody expensive... They are what they are.... but if you find a weak cranker I think I'd discount by about 2 grand...

I wouldn't think it would be too big of a deal to fix the heater. It's not necessary to have 4WD to push snow. If you get stuck you can always get yourself out with the hoe. The previous owner of my machine had a snow removal contract with a large company and he got along fine with 2WD.
