Looking at a dmi 527 disc ripper. Are you happy with it. How black does it turn it for corn on corn. How big of a tractor do you have on it? Thanks

A lot of the Hp question, is governed by soil types and ground conditions . . . . Are you in hills with heavy clay or flat black loams ? Is the ground generally moist/wet - giving traction problems?
I know a 7shank (730B - basiclly same as 530) takes all of 400 hp on my one clay hill ... . otherwise, it works well at 350hp pulling 12 inch deep at 6 - 6.5 mph.
It does make the soil pretty black and level, when adjusted properly. Although, this yr, with the hard, dry soil conditions, the front disks didn't cut and mix the trash as nicely as other normal soil condition yrs.
I'm of the opinion, if you chop the stalks first, it really does a nice job of turning the ground black. Very noticable difference betweened unchopped stalks and chopped stalks. A stalk chopper does a better job then a head chopper also - you can see the darker soil with a stalk chopper vs. the head chopper.

We bought a 527b yesterday, we have a 6-30 Landoll now and we are going to run two machines. It will be pulled with a 8870 Genisis, but when I was a kid we pulled a 527 dad borrowed from the dealer he worked at and we pulled it with our White 2-135. I would guess we pulled it about 10 " deep and it handled it. I would say if you have between 175-225 hp you will not have any trouble pulling it unless you want to go 16" deep.

Generally around here the 527s were pulled by smaller MFDs like 7800s or 7220s and 530s were 200+ hp machines.  As hard as the ground has been the past two years the 530s have needed 300hp and I know of a couple 527s being pulled by 75Cs.  We have a MRX 690 which has the same shanks as a 527 and our 300hp Cat 55 has struggled with it the past two years.

We had one about 10 years ago and liked it a lot.
It did a great job. But, at that time, we didn't have Bt corn and yields were 20-30 bu less. We pulled it with a big FWA, which wasn't enough. We later pulled it with a 9230 CIH -- that was an ideal combination in our conditions.

I pull mine with a 7240 mfwd and no way can it handle it
as deep as it will go. Usually 10-11" is all and get enough
speed to shatter anything. It does a nice job, but if I
was doing corn on corn I would want the stalks "sized"
before I ran it. I've never had any trouble with it since
I bought it.

A few years back we owned a 527 that had a 4 bar HD MacFarlene harrow on the back. After purchasing a 530B with leveling discs on the rear we bought leveling discs for the 527 so it would leave the soil more like the 530. IMO, the harrow did a much better job of leveling than the discs. Originally we pulled the 527 with a CIH 7240mfd and then later with a CIH 9230 4wd. I always felt the 7240 & 527 was a good match in our heavy black soils, 9230 pretty much played with it but we later found out the tractor was turning 300hp.

If looking to buy that type of tool I would look at the 527B. Biggest issue we had with our 527 was breaking the pivot bolt where the horizontal arm connected to the frame brackets. IIRC correctly the bolt was a grade 5 3/4" bolt. When the bolt broke it could be a bear to get the broken one out and new one in. Broken bolts became more of a problem after we started pulling it with the 8230. Partially because we were running faster and partially because the machine was getting worn. I have broken as many as 7 in one day :~(. My understanding is that on the 527B the updated that bolt to a steel pin and increased the size to 1". Friends have a 527B they still run & they haven't had an issue with the pins as far as I know.

The 527 ripping shanks are to far apart and leaves huge ridges doesn't do a nice job of leveling. As for horse power if you are in a hilly area 200 plus would be required but nice flat ground you might be able to get away with a little less.

We have run one for about 5 years. We really like ours which is a 527B. You need to run the shanks about 12 inches to make sure you get fracture between the shanks. That is the downside of any tillage tool with wider shank spacing. Speed is the key to making the tool perform the best preferably in the 5.5-6 mph range. If the levelers are set properly it will leave the ground very smooth. We pull ours with 240 HP and wouldn't want any less.

Yes we did, although it had found its way to Janesville.
