Glasford, IL. | So I was to vague in the first post. I am looking for a little insight on a 2011 John Deere 7230 MFWD (small frame) vs an 1981 4440 2WD. The 7230 is a power quad which I feel is a far superior transmission to the old quad range. Most of the work this tractor will do is pulling a Best Way 1000 gal sprayer, mowing hay and baling hay. The only issue I am worried about is if I hook onto a 21' disk like we did with the 4440 occasionally will I be happy? They call the 7230 a 135 engine HP/ 110 PTO HP. Any thoughts? Any one out there that can give a little feed back on their experiences with the John Deere 7230? |

Amherst WI | I rented a 7230 with an IVT with this spring to spray with, before it left it got hooked on my 21ft 490 IH disc too. It handeled it pretty well for that size of a tractor, but I wouldn't want to have that as the primary tractor for it. |

north central ky | we pulled a 21' j.d disk with our 7230. i pulled it without a packer and its all it wanted. it would get warm if i ran it too hard where the disk was cutting deep. |

Malheur County Oregon | Other than disking you would probably be real happy with the tractor. A 7430 would be a better choice on the disk |

Farmington IL | You should holler at Tom sometime. He got a new 7230 this fall. I wonder how well it would work mowing hay with the tires set on 30" centers? I know our 75 doesnt turn all that great with the front tires set in narrow. |

Glasford, IL. | AWESOME!!! Someone close that I can ask. I know it will not be "great" for mowing hay. Going from a 2WD to MFWD I assumed that was going to be the case. What I am finding is that I can buy a 7230 with low hours for very close to the same $ as the 7520 with 3500 hours (which is a similar tractor). To many damn options out there. And what would be the perfect fit is out of the price range I am considering. |

EC WI | I have a 7130 Premium that I use mainly for spraying, planting and spreading fertilizer. I have used it a few times pulling a 24 foot White disk. It pulled the disk fine. I couldn't pull it real fast but I thought it was very capable and didn't put a high load on the tractor. I think you will be happy with a 7230. |

Southeast Florida | You might want to be careful about how you pursue your choices. You just posted “I can buy a 7230 with low hours for very close to the same $ as the 7520 with 3500 hours”. Is the 7230 tractor you’re looking at a Premium or plain 7230, there’s a big difference there. The 7520 will have the Premium package which includes PFC hydraulics, and the plain 7230 will be open center hydraulics. It’s next to impossible to put any technology steering on the plain tractor and it doesn’t perform well with a loader either. Both of my 7230 small frames are Premium tractors and they cost $15K more per tractor that plain 7230’s do. |
