Subject: What could it weigh?

Steele County, MN
Neighbor on Sat asked me to come over with my tractor mounted forklift and unload some lumber for him (he had bought for shop project). Anyway went over there and it was a bundle of 2x6x16's that was a full bundle that was still wraped from when it arrived to the lumberyard.
Thinking that I could maybe lift it enough for him to pull the trailer out from underneath and than move it where he wanted it.
We both got a big surprise when I couldn't even budge it. So was just wondering if anyone had an idea on what a bundle of lumber like that would weigh. (Have lifted several pallets of seed that would be close to 3000 lbs or a little more.)

Thanks
Les

Were you using a JD 3010 ? Or a late model JD 8430 ?  What forklift ? What model ? What size cylinder ?  I could ask more, buy you should get the idea.

Was an IH 856.
But I just didn't realize that it would weigh that much over 3000 lbs that the tractor wouldn't even budge it

#2 douglas fir 2X6 are usually right around 2 lbs at linear ft,, so each board would weigh about 32 lbs,,now how many are in the full pallet? that could vary by the lumber yard and by what he ordered,, many lumberyards will just restrap what the customer needs....

now if the lumber was southern yellow pine , each board would weigh a little more,, and if treated , alot more......

Here is a link to a site that gives weights of various species of wood used for fuel , both green weight and air dried . Although it is for fuel wood , construction lumber should weigh very near the same as dry fuel wood per cubic foot. Southern yellow pine has cubic foot weight range of 36-41 lbs.
Calculate the volume of your stack , multiply by 36 or 41 and you will get real close to the weight. If your stack was 4' wide by 2' high and 16' long there would be 128 cu. feet. At 36 lbs. /cu.ft. it would be 4,608 lbs. No wonder your tractor won't lift it .

My day job is front desk at retail lumber yard. Most full packs of 2x6's are 192 pcs. We usually stock SFH (spr, fir, hem) 2x6's and a 4,000lb capacity piggyback forklift will just barely pick up a full pack of 16 footers. We will occasionally order pine 2x6's and they will weigh even more.

What difference does that make................he asked how heavy the wood is........not the loader tractor (LoL)

Yep, you are right. lol  Guess I was thinkin if the loader had a capacity of 3800 lbs, a person might guess the pile would be heavier than that. Or if the loader could lift 3 ton, it should weigh more than 3 ton. Hydraulic / lift  capacity of the tractor and/or loader might be a clue as to how heavy the pile would be that it could not lift it.
