Wanting to upgrade main tillage tractor. Currently have 8650 JD. are 9400 JD's very good tractors? what are the pluses and minuses of them? which transmission is better, the powershift or the manual? what should we look for? or should we get into the 9020 series?

We had one of the first ones.  Ran just over 3,000 hrs.  Had one injector go out was the only problem.  Great tractor.  When you say manual I am assuming you mean the 24 speed?  Thats what ours had and I perfered it over the 12 speed powershift.  Now if you looking at a 20 series, I would take the 18 speed powershift over the manual.  If you are farming with a 8650 then you will love a 9400 or 9420.

I have a '98 9400 with 2000 hours with no problems so far. several neighbors have 9400's with 4000-7000 hours and haven't heard them complain either. The computer is a little slow to respond meaning the engine doesn't pull at full power instantly when it feels a load. there is about a 1 second lag. the later model tractors were quicker to respond. mine has the 16 speed trans.

Have a 9420 and a 9400. Both are over 6k on hrs. The 18speed powershift is a good all around trans. The 12 speed is just ok. 12 speeds you have to start out in first in both directions and use the clutch. Are 12 speed you can't shift under heavy draft loads very well just way too hard on things. Had a 24 speed in a 9400T and it was a good setup imo. 20 series is prob the best 4x4's out there right now. Any older no 18speed, any newer emissions and electronics.

9400 is probably some of the best reliable, affordable HP right now. Several on here have said that a 00 series will pull with the next size bigger 20 series. Running a 9400 and a 9420 I would agree. We have a 9400 with 3300 hours on it. The guys who had it before us didn't put many hours on it. So far the only thing that has been done to it was a little work on the hydraulic outets because it wanted to spit the hoses out, and a wire came loose on one of the injectors.  3300 hours with that kind of reliability is pretty darn good if you ask me.

Who knows, maybe tomorrow it will puke the water pump out and ruin the motor.....

There is no 16 speed in a 9400. 12 powershift, 12 manual, or 24 sp manual with high low armrest shifter. We have the 24 speed.

We put integrated autosteer on ours several years ago and it has been worth every penny. I think it will be worth that much more when we go to get rid of it too.

sounds like it may be worth it to get a 24 speed. what size motor is in the 9400? i have heard of people chipping 9320's up to the size of 95 and 96's. i guess what size of chisel, disk, and disk ripper are good behind a stock 9400? thanks.

Slicker than a Yes album.
12.5 L deere engine. We pulled a 7 shank 30" DMI ecolo tiger (not sure if those exist in your part of the world) and a 33' deere 680 chisel plow with 22 Tru Depth shanks. (1250 lb'ers.)

As Chad said, good grunt in the early ones. We had injector probs in our '97 but was a good tractor after that. Having the 18 spd PS would be the ticket, but they didn't come that way.

If you look for a 20 series, not sure what to tell you to look for. Earlier the better before emissions came along?
