Subject: Purina cattle feed.......

N/E Iowa
I recently switched from our local feed mill feed (Hubbard feed) to Purina feed to feed our feeder cattle. We wean around 400 pds, and then put them on a cement lot and finish them out. I have a small heard of 34 Angus cows. The question i'm wondering about is have any of you out there fed Purina feed? This stuff is called "Acuration starter" and then finisher will come about about around 750 pds.
The pellet in the bags seem to be ground up and soft, and the calves seem to "eat around the protien" to get to the corn. It seem to build up in the smidley feeder and then the calves back away from it, and eat more loose hay. Am i doing something wrong? I have complained that this problem will be an issue when the cold wet weather hits..... It's called frozen feed feeding out of the feeder!! Atleast with Hubbard feed protien was a hard pellet that didn't break down so easy.

I would still be with hubbard feed, but the local mill closed there doors after 50 plus years in the buisness:( I topped the sale barn many times finishing fats on Hubbard........ I'm hoping Purina doesn't let me down!!!!

I have never fed it but I wonder how you afford it. Is it not sky high?

350 pds per ton, I have a 3 ton grinder, so I get 1,050 pds of acuration starter. And don't quote me but i think it was $228.00 for 1,050 pds. Haven't bought any for two weeks. I mix it with shelled corn, and oats IF I back the protien down 200 pds per grinding. What are you "smaller" cattle herds feeding that seems to work good, and will be there when you need them?

32 head roughly 500 pds, with free choice of grass hay are eating 3 ton feeder down nearly empty in 10 days. Just looking for some answers. Thanks

The acuration is basically a stinking (atleast I think it stinks) fish byproduct feed limiter. I did not know they pelleted it now, when I used it years ago it was just in meal form. It is a great feed, works the best, and will really slick cattle up, but it is pricey and the problem feeding out was a huge complaint of mine. Feed suppliers response was to clean trough out every few days and recycle it back to the top. Yeah, thats what I want to do, you bet. Once you cut the level out enough it will finally get tolerable on price and the feedability, but I am still not sure it's worth the hassle or expense for that matter. When I tried it I was supplementing some 7 weight yearlings on grass with wooden self feeders.

Sounds like to me there is a problem with which concentrate your using.Accuration starter is a complete feed we used in the past(name then was Impact starter)works good but expensive to use for anything but starting..The 350 pounds per ton Sounds like Impact Grower Concentrate(17.5 % per ton). This is suppose to be used with NO hay fed. If you are using hay you should be using Accuration Concentrate, Accu Ration 20% and Corn 80% you will need to increase Accuration as they grow and consumption goes up..We use Accuration for both creep in pasture and growing rations on grass or hay..We use Impact Grower and corn to test bulls for 75 days then back to Accuration corn and hay or on to corn silage ration.
Good luck.

Told me the same thing take two five gallon pails and clean it out and throw it back on top of the feed in the feeder..... NO, Thats not how i have done it for 20 years, and not going to start. The first cold day (-15) i'm calling them out and hope they have a hammer and chisel cause there gunna need it to get the frozen feed to feed down. Oh they also said open up the feeder, tried it doesn't work they waste the chit out of it on the ground. I am half tempted to try something else before it's to crappy out, but i'm afraid of switching these feeder calves and getting them sick.... Any thoughts, and what are you guys feeding that are feeding out of a self feeder to finish out fat cattle? I need a harder pellet to mix with oats that we have, and shelled corn.. HELP........ This soft meal type pellet isn't going to work for me:(

Maybe you need to forget their intake limiters and use the good ole Feedlot 49 w/Rumensin.Doesn't have any fishy stuff in it,just a regular ole supplement.

Local co-op here pushing it this year, just saw results of a local feeding trial on 400# calves, not bad but question the farm on which the trial was held. I too thought they were calling it a omplete feed.

The problem for smaller guys like me and you is the availability of different choices, (limited to what the local store or supplier carries) and also the quantity you can take delivery of at one time. Could you take a semi-load of bags at once, or however much it would take to get them finished? If you have a forklift/skid loader and a building with a concrete floor to store it I would try and call Hubbard direct and order that way, or find another supplier. If you dealt with the same store for 50 years, call the owner up since you probably know him and ask who the next closest to you dealer is that carries Hubbard products and buy it from them. FWIW I used Kent pellets last winter and they were pretty stong pellets.

Not sure where in NE Iowa you are, but Vita Plus is worth looking into. They have a warehouse in Central City 30 mi from my front door and deliver no charge, no minimum order. Bagged product runs $23-24/cwt and is lower inclusion rate than what your using. Also Farmer Shipping in Dyersville is a dealer I believe. Good luck finding a mill to make a ration using your oats. I've concluded through months of beating my head against the wall mills just wanna sell overpriced pellets and corn. The days of building a ration around what you grow on farm are history.
