| I have been doing more COC lately and really like the results of my neighbors moldboard plow. It is a John Deere 10 bottom model 3710 that is almost new and most of those newer plows are out of the price range that I want to spend. There are some others that plow around here mainly with smaller plows but I have the horsepower to pull 9 or 10. My question is about the big older plows such as international and wilritch plows that I see advertised in other areas for cheap. Are these old plows something that will work as good as the 3710 and with some money and minor work done to them they will be good plows or is it asking for trouble? I would be plowing at least 500 acres a year maybe more. |

mid minnesota | I dont know much on the JD plows , but we have an 800 10 bottom IH and works great in corn stalks and the best part is parts off an old 700,710, fits on the 800 execpt the main shank is like a 720 |

NW Washington | Either of those two plows will work well. Both of them had large "hinge back" plows for a long time while Deere was still trying to sell tandem plow lash ups. |

Penn Yan, NY | white 449s and 549s are good plows. we run 2 of them, both set up as 8 btm machines. If you are pretty flat you could set one up as a 9 or 10 btm 18 inch. just be a bit careful how you use your HP up front, sometimes the long bolts that hold the resets to the frame can crack if you hit a big rock going over 5 mph. white also built a 2549 and a 2588 which were basicly 2 5, or 6 btm machines made into a flex beam. looks like a decent design but they are really hard to find. |

Northern CA | The IH plows seem cheap and dependable to me. One option to consider, as this is what I did and am very happy, is going with a Harrell switch plow. You can get those in up to seven bottoms, but they are 24" per bottom. Seven bottoms on a Harrell would plow 168 inches (14') and a 9 bottom with 18" bottoms would plow 162" (13.5'). With the switch plow you can go back and forth, not around. To me, this was a major advantage. Also, I have an IH plow, 155 rollover, and I think our Harrell is cheaper to replace steel on than the IH. Just my thoughts... |

Oregon | pmartens07: Have you ever used a Kuhn Multi-Master? I ran one yesterday for the first time. I have never run a rollover. It was behind a new Deere 8R and I was really impressed with the set-up. -Mike |

North-Central Oklahoma | The Deere 3700 plow is the older version of the 3710. I think the only difference is the 3710 has a walking tandem in the center section. The 2700 is also a good Deere plow. I would stay away from the 3600 series as the standards are shorter and residue tends to plug them up. |

Strathcona, mn | I've had a 720 IH a 3600 JD and wilrich 2900's.... The 3600 jd was a POS.... do not own one if you want to plow corn stalks. The IH was a good plow but I don't like all of the cast pieces on them. I presently own a 10 and a 11 bottom wilrich plows. For the little that I do with them I think they are a great plow and very reasonably priced. Up here you can get a 10-12 bottom for under $2500.00 in near field ready condition. I've pulled a 2588 white 12 bottom doing custom work, it was also a very good plow but very heavy. Don't be afraid to have plenty of hp and wight available as the hinge plows are heavy and require quite a bit of power to move the base machine around. |

| Look for a IH plow and you will never go back to a Deere |

Northern Idaho | Those old IH and wil-rich plows are popular around here and seem to be pretty good plows. We run an old 8 bottom melroe hinge back and a 6 bottom massey of the same vintage and there is not comparison in breakdowns/reliability. The melroe was not built heavy enough and has many breakdowns now as it gets older. The melroe won't go in hard dry ground as well as other plows either. There used to be several people here using melroes and now I think we are the only ones keeping one going. If we planned to do a lot of plowing for many years we would buy a better plow.

18c ditch system, winthrop Mn | If you would consider a new plow, the Salford might be the way to go. My neighbor has a 12 bottom, it is 56 ft long and has tons of clearance and is very easy to adjust. |
