Ea. Washington | Plowed many an acre with a wire hanging off the plow beam of each bottom. Fasten it about 2-3 feet ahead of the curve in the plow beam and long enough to drag about 2 ft into the furrow at the RH side of the share. workes best to turn to the right and leave the plow in the ground or at least be turning to the right when you drop the plow. Turned a lot of acres of 6' sweet clover under with a set up like that , won't help much in short trash and is kind of a PITA but you can git it done.

NW Washington | Here is a picture of a "weed hook" on a small mounted plow from years gone by which might be less of a hassle than dragging wires. (Plow with weed hooks.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Plow with weed hooks.jpg (24KB - 207 downloads)

Chillicothe, Missouri | I do not have any experiance in plowing with the wire in tall trash, but I have discussed it with individuals before. -I was told it was best to attach the wire to the rolling cutter mount, and then trail by the moldboard that the cutter is for. -Also I believe that the wire would be best if trailing past the moldboard approx. 5 feet -I was told that it was best to use heavy wire, approx 1/8" in diameter Edit: each moldboard would have a wire on it. example: three bottom plow would have three wires, one for each molboard Edited by detroitdiesel 10/17/2011 12:40

I can remember plowing soybeans under with a number 9 wire attached to each coulter --this was in the sixties (man am I getting old). This had something to do with some sort of government program that Dad was enrolled in. This was with a three bottom pull type plow that had a trip rope--ah, for the good old days!!!

NW Minnesota | Yep we've tied 1/8" wire onto the beam between the bottoms and left it 6' or so long. Worked pretty good in 5'-6' sweet clover that got away from us one wet summer.

West Central Illinois | Not trying to steal the thread here, but I never cease to be impressed with the broad base knowledge shared here. Has anyone ever asked a question that someone didn't know the answer to?

Blue Earth, MN | Nope, you'll always get an answer. Might not be the one you were looking for and it might start a flame war, but you'll get an answer. :)

Yep like others said. It will really tuck the tall stuff under. Assuming you are in the process if you have trouble with grassy stuff "hairpinning" around the standard (is that the right word?) you can move the coulter in line with the land side of the moldboard rather than offset a little as they are usually set.

South Texas | Yes, that's what my dad did for years in cornstalks and sometimes other trashy plowing. I'd suggest a little longer, though, if it's really tall stuff you're trying to keep down. And 1/8" is sure minimum. Others suggest #8 or 9 and that sounds better to me. He fastened the wires to each coulter, at the bearing area. The technique is really effective.

Embarrass WI | You'll probably get at least a couple answers, and one of them might even be right!

Chebanse, IL..... | Yes, that's the way we did it. Each plow carried a roll of #9 wire on it for replacement. They'd wear off or sometimes the tail wheel would run over the rear-most wire & tear it off. The wire would fasten fairly high on the rolling-coulter shank. One for each bottom. I think we used to cut the wires about 6' long.
