north central nebraska
local deere dealer brought out a 2010 9870 and 35 foot flex draper to demo.not sure what it took other than a software update to make the two work together. was really impressed . we're dealling with greenstems and dry ( 8%) soybeans . our 9860 with 635 header is shattering beans as the reel pushes the plants against the auger. as the reel on the draper head pushes the plants back to the canvases the canvases take the plants to the center of the head without the constant batting back of the reel. the draper fed enough better that we could go over 1/2 mph faster. pretty impressive head. dealer said not able to buy head without ordering combine at the same time just like everyone else has posted.

Sounds like you need an air reel on your 635, guys love them in beans.

Did the draper have much soybean loss?

I have alot of loss with a new FD70 in 7-8% beans and some tough stems.

How fast would the 9870 handle the head under what conditions?

What a novel concept. Who else could have ever come up with a draper head besides Deere?

And it took 7 hours for someone to say this after the original thread was posted. You guys are slipping. Usually the Deere didn't invent this comment comes much faster. What's wrong?

Agco has a flex draper. The hinge draper by Macdon is not a flex draper.

i have been waiting to hear of someone trying a flex draper on a 9870. our 635 has the same problem as yours in these dry beans.

as for the comments about deere, the guy said nothing about deere being the only ones with a draper or better then anything else, all he was doing is telling his experience with the platform. maybe you guys really love deere deep down and just have to trash talk them to fool yourself.

If I had fields that looked like that demo I think I'd be looking at changing alot more than just a combine header.

So when the knife flattens out on a straight piece of ground, your reel is 4"-6" above the knife??

Our ground doesn't look like that but that's why Macdons hinge draper does such a crappy job cutting.

True........... but,

"our 9860 with 635 header is shattering beans as the reel pushes the plants against the auger. as the reel on the draper head pushes the plants back to the canvases the canvases take the plants to the center of the head without the constant batting back of the reel. the draper fed enough better that we could go over 1/2 mph faster. pretty impressive head."

Uhh, this is what Mac don guys have been saying for 5+ years now.    Its kinda like the guys who really think Zero turn lawn mowers are the cats azz....... since deere came out with one a few years ago.

Even though Zero turns have been around forever.

Edit: at the risk of sounding like a smart butt, the reason the "deere bashers" come out on occasions like this is because its similar to putting a B student into special ed classes.  I realize some may not be in the know due to dealer location and loyalty.....  Its the following the heard mentality that is easy to pick on....

With my personality, well,,,,,,,,,, its just fun to do.

I know a guy who bought a deere 20 series track because of the seat.   When I priced one, that is the only thing the salesman could think of to say that made the machine what it was/is......  (special ed classes)

Hope your harvest is safe, fast, and bountifull.

Good luck

A crappy job of cutting????  Have you used one??   No a Macdon won't cut between hilled potato rows, but I wouldn't say it does a crappy job of cutting.
If they did a demo where they had a wide arced field ridge the Macdon would hands down beat the Deere.  The Deere would only be able to cut a strip down the center.  Its all in how you set up a demo.
And I am not trying to bash Deere, they are trying, and when Deere comes out with their hinged wing draper you'll think it is the best thing EVER.

Lots of Macdons around here and lots of uncut beans left in those guys fields compared to a head that actually flexes.

The difference will be that Deere will make a hinged head that will actually flex.

Has anybody herd a price range for this yet.. I'm thinking Macdon won't lose many customers just on price.

We run a macdon and a 635F. And the macdon shaves the ground a lot better, specially on terraces. I do like what see with the JD draper.

I was told by a deere salesman the 35' would be about 80K but you had to buy a new combine to get one.

I think Macdon wanted it to stand for "flexdraper" but they should have checked with Chad H first

They can call it whatever they want, but it doesn't change the fact that it's not a true flex head.
