Subject: gas powered fuel transfer pump?

South Central Kansas, Harper County
Does anybody use a gas powered pump for fuel transfer on their fuel tank wagons? I can buy a 5 hp motor with pump for about $350, ( the kind I use for water/chemical transfer for my spray nurse tank). It will put out weigh more GPM than a similar priced 12 volt pump. I imagine it would work, but how would it handle the automatic shutoff nozzle I am used to using? Does a person have to run some sort of bypass?
thanks for any information.
Jim

We have a 3.5 hp and a 5hp gas pump for years on diesel tanks/wagons with no return. Never had any issues or problems whatsoever. Pumps alot more than the 12 volts on other tanks. Alot cheaper in the long run to operate a gas over the 12 volt.

Edit... we use the cast housing not the poly.

We run either 1" shutoff nozzles on ours with no troubles, or or the big ones the furnace oil delivery guys use with no autoshutoff.  Be prepared for spills filling mobile equipment with no whistles and poor visibility into the tank (less than a 3" fill hole) with the furnace oil nozzles though.

We use a 5.5 horse Honda with a regular chemical pump. Pumps about 30-40 gpm. The auto shutoff nozzle doesn't affect the pump in any way. 1" hose and nozzle here too. Rarely do we spill any other than the once or twice the auto nozzle didn't kick off. It got replaced shortly thereafter.

The only problem we have with ours is the square 4 bolt rubber seal gasket on the top of the pump swells up and pooches out the sides of the housing and leaks. Chunk it and get some fuel resistant cork or rubber and make a new seal gasket. So far the pump has held up fine. This one has been on there 4-5 years. The previous one was a Briggs powered one and it lasted about 5 years before the engine went bad. The pump was still working fine.

I use a 2" banjo pump. Only thing you have to do is call and get a Buna-N rebuild kit ($50) as the EDPM software that comes with the pump won't last but a month or so before it swells up and causes problems.

Chebanse, IL.....

We do the same. Ours is powered by a 5 hp Honda knock-off type motor. It will pump 10x faster than the 20 gpm 12V pump it replaced. Gas powered pumps are much faster than any electrics. You can let the motor idle  & still fill a big tank in 10 minutes.

Does anyone have pictures of their setup? We have a 200 gallon square fuel tank we haul around on a trailer that has an electric pump on the top of it now. A couple questions I have are:

Do you have to plumb the gas motors and pumps into an outlet on the bottom of the tank? and if so does that mean you are getting any dirt or other foreign material that has settled out in the tank coming out first?

Do you have a filter plumbed into your setups and if so do you have to have a high volume filter of some kind to handle the output of the gas motor and pump?

Any insight and pictures would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, Sam

We use a little 2 stroke 1 in. pump. Will move low 20's gal/min. One inch hose works fine. Put GPI electronic meter on at pump so it wouldn't get banged around on nozzle. It went crazy around electronic ignition. Moved it away 18 in. and it works fine. Also, always use nipples and 90's, not street L. Won't reduce flow as much.

That looks real good. Where did you source your 2 cycle motor/pump?

Couldn't get our 12v pump on the top of the tank to prime tonight...time for an alternative.

Northern Hyd.. They had a knock off cheaper that was probably ok, but the last thing you want in the field is a motor that won't run, so we bought the name brand one.

Ours draws out of the bottom. Change the filters quite often. Need to tee in another filter to get more volume thru to the nozzle. Lots better than the electrics it replaced.

3.5 horse seem to last longer than the 5 horse. In the end, they will pump just as much fuel. We had one years ago on a older fuel wagon that smoked so bad. In fact I was told to watch the smoke and if it stopped smoking to shut it down and add more oil. Sure enough, when it stopped smoking it was nearly dry of oil!

From working with a fuel tank manufacturer they approached Honda about using their gas powered transfer pumps for fuel, and they stated they would not warrent a honda motor in that application as they are not intrinsicly rated devices / UL listed for fuel transfer.

Just a thought to consider seal failure or other leak in close proximity to a gas motor.
