Huntley Montana

Got my new JD 995 switch plow.   Seems to like shear bolts, plowed 25a & used about 25 shear bolts, seems like the front bottom needs a 3/8 bolt .
Tractor seems to pull it easy enough.  Wish the front bottom would be futher out so the dual would stay out of the furrow.  No fluid in tires & 2200# of nose weight.

Use grade 8 bolts.

Already using grade  8s.    & it's nice plowing. Could see it if it was dry & hard.  But this ground is about perfect condition for plowing. Needs the roller harrow in 2-3 days.

Badger, does the shear bolts go though the side or in the front of the arm. Neighbor bought a new 4 bottom about two years ago. Couldn't keep shear bolts in, at least in our hard ground. He told JD to come get it, he went and fixed his old JD 4200 slatted plow up. Said it was ten times the plow the switch plow was.

He went and looked at a older switch plow in the valley a guy had, they had shear bolts though the side. But I remember they had drilled theirs out to 3/8" grade 8's. I'm thinking they even went bigger, still had problems. I will ask him today what size he went too.

I know my 4200 plow had 5/16" in it, I drilled them out to 3/8" grade 8 long ago. I still shear them if not careful. Can't have much side torque, must plow straight. That's what seem to take mine out. I think we have the hardest ground ever. It also seemed that any little wear in shear bolt hole, and wear on pivot bolt, they sheared more frequently.

They have a arm that buckles in the center with a 5/16 grade 8 bolt that is "pulled" to shear. Saw 1 that had took the threads out of the nut, so started double nutting them. seemed to help a little, but still have a lot go.

Something is haywire somewhere. We hardly ever shear bolts off Gotta hit something real solid to break one.

The worse is the ends, & starting a field now. Have to go real slow & lift the nose to start a field. But working "slants"  the front trips real easy.  But the 8410  is handling 8 real easy in the conditions we are in, the 1 field it'ld pull it in 11th, the new field it's 9-10th about a good ft deep.

Are you using flat washers? If your having problems with the front bottom, a grade 5 bolt might help. It should stretch before it breaks, if you aren't hitting anything.

I tryed a Grade 5, it lasted about 6".. Do I need washers? I'm game for anything that would help. Didn't think the 8410 would be that hard on it with no fluid or rear weight.

We always run them. Are the bolts holding the bottom to the standard tight. The only time we have much trouble is rocks or dry black ground. You may want to look into the auto resets if it doesn't get better. That 8 bottom is one heavy plow. We have stuck with 7 because we run Sterling packers and road plenty. Watch your top pin, my uncle broke 3 in one year and try to avoid being under it with it in the air!

Everythings tight. Yea it's HEAVY,,, thinking I might need another 10-20 weights on the nose,,,22 now. Will try the washers.. It says on the plow 10 mph transport? yea right... So I better buy a extra pin ot 2?
