Subject: Westfield Auger problems

I have purchased a new 13 inch westfield auger with swing away and i wonder if anyone else is having to correct numerous problems with this machine ,,,, first time i tried it it was throwing beans out of the hopper onto the ground so i took off the four inch rubber strip and replaced it with a 12 inch ,, solved that problem,,, then it would spill large amounts of grain out on the ground from the spring loaded cover on the leg discharge because the feed augers fed too fast so I changed the sprockets on the feed augers from 14 teeth to 16 teeth to solve that problem,,,, then I noticed main drive chain very noisy ,,,,,factory had set the chain too tight,,,,,,,main drive sprocket set screws were very loose,,,,,had to tighten them,,,,,,,,,hydraulic lift hose was assembled intertwined with the lift cable and would have caused a catastophic faliure if i had not noticed it before the first time I raised up the auger,,,,,,,,main decal for safety warning was installed upside down and not readable,,,,,,, after just a few hours of use the main universal joint that drives the swingaway gearbox is sliding off the shaft, and since it is one quarter turn from the slot, the square key was never installed ,,,,,,,,Cables were rubbing each other found out the roller was missing that keep the cables from contacting,,,,dealer supplied another ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Contacted Westfield ,,,,,,have not had any response from them yet

Northeast Nebraska
We bought a new 10" a few years ago. Sprockets on swing out hopper were out of alignment. China chain broke. All the tires were flat on the hopper right away. Main drive chain too tight, also out of alignment, also made in china. On the 10" we could easily flood hopper and shear the bolt. I think the hopper should be geared slower, which you have done. We bought a new 13" last year. No problems.

Both augers bought from same dealer. I think alot of the problems have to do with the guy who puts them together.

Talk to your dealer about problems with assembly. He's the one that put it together.

I'll second what GangGreen said. Its more then likely Westfield shipped the auger disassembled to the dealer ( unless you picked it up at the plant), so the dealer would be the one that did the assembly and it sounds like most if not all of your issues are assembly related.

Had similar problems with a brandt 10/70 a few years back. Good eye to catch the hydraulic problem. After we tightend up alot of set screws and aligned chains it was a good one. The toolbox is never far away though. I guess the guys that assemble 100's of them forget to care. We have an older westfield and were wishing we bought another one at that time. Agri-vating....

That reminds me of a conversation I had with a guy who worked for another fellow who was hired by a dealership to assemble new equipment.
He said his boss told him," If we are paid by the hour, use the hand tools, if paid by the machine, use the air wrench."
Sad but true.

We had two west fields. One for wet corn to the dryer and a 1070 swing. Both new 2 years ago. The 8 41 gearbox came from fargos westfied assembly plant and the gearbox was out. We didn't even put a motor on it! 1070 ran rougj and loud empty. Broke the chain, slid sprockets, all upper wheels went flat. Neighbors had 1370s that ran loud and hot. One guy almost burned his hand! Needless to say we don't have any westfields and switched to brandts. The dealer that sold the brandt also sells west fields and had one auger tore apart at the factory three times. Fighting was warped or something. Good luck

Westfield somehow managed to make their product sloppier and cheaper each year. They are built here and no one has them.

I bought a new 13 71 last yr. Noticed they had the hydraulic hose running inbetween the cables, that would have been a disaster if the line got caught and broke open.
Otherwisw no problems, sure does eat corn.

The dealers set up the augers most likely by the minimum wage high school kid on a Monday morning after a wild weekend. I do almost all my own setup when I can.
