Subject: John deere walker vs rotor combines?

Central NY
We are looking at up grading our combine to a 50 series either 9550 or 9650sts and i was wondering what would be better. We do a variety of crops including small grains, corn, soybeans, edible beans, and clover seed. How do theses machines handle theses different crops. We dont care about the saving the straw out main concern is the grain quality.
thanks

Go with the 9650STS. It probably won't be a lot more$ on a used machine but the capacity will be much better. The rotor is a huge upgrade from conventionals I know first hand. You won't believe how much better the machine feeds and the increase in capacity. Mother Deere was stuck building conv. far too long before they saw the light but Mother knows best.

The rotary will be much easier on your edible beans too, provided you don't ding them up with the feeder beater/stone trap in front of the rotor.

Okay but now the question is will we be able to run enough martial through a 9650sts with a 6 row corn head? Our corn yields are between 80 and 150 bpa.

When I went from a 9550 to a 9650STS, I ran a 6 row for one year. 7mph in 180 bu corn.

I now have a 8 row head and still run 3.5-5 mph in 180 bu corn

How did the capacity compare between the 9550 and the 9650sts? what speed were you able to go with the 9550 with a six row head?

9550 and a 6 row head should get you around 4.5 mph on level going in 180-200bpa 20% or less corn. We ran a 9500, 9510, and 9560 all walkder sidehill machines with a 6 row head and you could get up to over 5mph in the nice goin and always maintain at least 4 everywhere else. In 09 when we had lots and lots of 30%+ corn, we were down to 3.5mph. We put an 8 row head on the 9560 last year and started out around 3.5mph at 21% corn and were runnin around 4.2 at the end of the season with 15% corn. Traded for a 9670 this year, so back up to 5+mph again:( I Really liked the 3.5-4mph speed the 8 row let us run with the 9560
