cropsey, il 61731 | I got a deal on a pretty nice skid steer except that it has a pinto 4 cylinder engine in place of the original renault gas engine. It more or less runs ok, but a small diesel would have better torque and I wouldn't have to spin the engine as much. The original specs had the hp at 32hp and I'm sure the pinto engine has more (I can not confirm it's from a pinto or that it's a 2.3L - it's overhead cam, has a blue valve/cam cover that has ford stamped into it, and it's a flow through head). Since about everything has been rebuilt on the skid steer, I think I could make it really nice with a small diesel - any recommendations? something between 40 - 50hp. thanks, Pat

near dyersville iowa | how much different is an 1830 from a 1838 or 1840? I had an 1838 with a kubota diesel in it, was a decent skidloader, although not as nice as an 1840. I would think you could probably find a kubota someplace, but i have no idea if it would be a nightmare to make it work or not..

SW Ohio | 855 wouldn't fit??? seriously, we have a Mustang that came with an industrial Ford pinto style in it, it was different enough that parts were harder to get. It now has my favorite replacement engine...an Izuzu 4 cyl diesel, came out of a reefer unit I bought at junk yard for $200, and scrapped what was left for $100. I have done three re-powers now with that motor and it is just right for a skidder or small HP job. It is the same as was in Chevy LUVs and Izuzu pickups and Thermo King reefers. I have three spares for future MacGuyver Madness.

cropsey, il 61731 | That sounds like a great idea. We have TK unit that is going on our 'butcher shop', but it sits in town and I'm not sure folks will want to here the motor running - I wonder if I could pull the engine for my skid steer and install a 10-15hp 3 phase motor to drive the TK unit? Anyway, I got the pinto engine running about as good as it can (installed an inline fuel filter and, most importantly, unkinked the fuel line), but it just doesn't have the grunt a diesel would at lower rpm's (I've got the pinto engine pretty much screeming). thanks, pat

Would you be interested in a JD 2.4 liter engine ?

EC IA | We have a 1830 that has a duetz Diesel in plaace of the gas motor. works pretty good and don't need to make room for a radiator

Just a thought if you wanted to stick with a gas engine that should have more grunt if there was room for it. How about an industrial Ford 200 cid inline 6? I know they were used on the Versatile 400 swathers. Still should be some good engines out there in worn out swathers. IMO, the C-153 IH 4 cyl engine used in IH 210 swathers was a good engine also.
