Subject: JD Gator clutch...rebuildable?

I spoke with someone at the dealer about an issue with one of my 4X2 gators jumping belts. He indicated that the clutch may need to be replaced. I removed the belt and ran the engine up to fast idle and back down. The clutch appears to move in and out as it is supposed to, but it isn't as smooth as I think it should be. He told me that I need to replace the entire clutch ($390) and that they can't be rebuilt. It's not that I don't trust him, just wanted to verify other's experience.

I just put a new belt on it a few days ago, but I think something (probably a cornstalk) may have gotten between the belt and the sheaves causing it to twist or flip over and subsequently ruining it. I put the old belt back on and it works fine. We run these gators through standing sweet corn when we pick so it's not unusual for something to get caught in the drive belt area.

So, has anyone rebuilt them with any success? I think number 5 in the parts diagram is what I need to make it work smooth, but I haven't taken it apart.

What model is the gator? There are several aftermarket rebuild kits depending on the models.

Really old original 4X2 Gator.

Do you have a source for aftermarket parts? Or a Link?

Don't know about the gator. But the clutch looks just like the yamaha golf cart. #5 are rollers and #10 are weights that push out as it goes faster. They are replaceable in the yamaha. You remove the clutch with a special tool. Might be done on the cart but easier to work with on a bench. Unscrew the star in the middle. Remove and replace weights and rollers. Reassemble with lock tite.

It basically like a snowmobile clutch. As long as there aren't significant wear grooves in the pulley faces, you should be able to rebuild the wear parts.  The way the clutch works and the possible weight shape it might not appear smooth but be working fine. It'll start to close up quickly and easily then when the flyweights start to push on the rollers it'll engage slower for a bit.

On sleds, when a belt flips it wouldn't hurt to check that your motor mounts are ok. If one is broke, then it can't keep the clutches inline.

Flandreau, SD

just as well put a new spring in it also.  number 8

And might as well go through the secondary clutch as well.  Spring and slide buttons most likely.

Careful when you take them apart, it is under pressure with the spring in there.

Warren, IN.
You can purchase number 5. I have replaced this assembly before with success. I believe around $135. May have a broken spring also. Check alinment too. This can fix most of the clutch problems from experience.

How do you adjust the belt alignment on the gator. I assume that either the engine or transmission are mounted on slotted holes or something??

Thanks. I thought about rebuilding everything until I start adding up all the individual parts.

I found both clutches and a belt for $583. http://www.shopgreendealer.com/4x218mphclutchkit.aspx

Looks as though by the time you replace all the parts it's adding up to about half the cost of the kit.
