Will be using for ripping, cultivating and buggy. JD is tier 3 engine and Steiger has new tier 4 with DEF so which tractor would you go with? I know hp is not quite the same but JD tractor is alot lower price. What are the pro and cons of both tractors such as ride, fuel efficiency, traction, ease of service, reliability, ease of turning on headlands and driving backing up, etc. TIA

the deere is an all around nicer tractor. plus tier 4 engines suck. the 9430 is no power house, but for a grand they can be boosted to approx 500 hp.

what sucks about better fuel economy, more power, cooler running, and yeah you have to add some extra fluid but it hasn't been a big deal yet.

Do you have any comparisons for a tier 4 compared to a tier 3 tractor that you previously used?

nebraska tests have been good on the tier 4. Not that many out in this area yet, we didn't get them in until spring was over.

on big local operator traded a bunch of 535 steigers for new 550's. The 550's pulling the same implements as the 535's did burnt 6 gals per hour less, and that was after figuring DEF use as well. He said depending on your hours per day, he was putting DEF fluid in about every third day. Donkey must not have any experience between the two to make a statement like that, or he is really colorblind.

The def is a pain in the ass. Have to have a tote and 12volt pump to fill tractor in field all the time now. I guess everything will have it someday. Wish they put a spout into the resevoir so we wouldnt have to fill from both sides.

The John Deere has a way better hydraulic lever placement and ergonomics in their tractors I think.  The Steiger must have been designed for people with humongous hands.  The levers are way too far apart to use more than one at a time comfortably I think.  Although they are still a really nice tractor.  That's the thing in the cab that needs changed the most I think.

The hyd levers on new magnums and steigers are different. Smaller than the first ones. I have a magnum 215 and levers are a little more clumsy than I would like but the new ones are much more ergonomic. Have been in both new cabs. Deere has improved their cab alot but I believe Case has the upper hand slightly on that one. Deere has the same throttle, shifting, hyd combo since about 1997. At the time it was great but its time for a change. As far as DEF, i wouldnt worry about that, have heard good things. Steiger will have more power and have better fuel efficiency. All depends on what other brands you have on your farm. Its nice to deal with one dealer. My $.02

maybe one of these years deere will figure out how to put gear selection and throttle in the same lever... maybe. although now in the next level of case i have sure got a fond appreciation of running the #1 hydraulics and transmission and shuttle shift and autosteer resume and throttle all without moving my hand.

maybe deere will figure out how to put more than 48gpm hydraulic pump on too?

we have an R series JD and a steiger 385 (i know i know they cant be compared, but i can compare cabs), the cab on the steiger is much more user friendly and has more room than the JD one, I prefer the Case style hyd levers as the way they work makes more sense than the JD ones. I like to think I am unbiased in this but maybe I am kidding myself.

I went from a 9100 to a Case 335. Looked at a 9230 on the way to the Del. fair. Glad I went with the Case. Go with the Steiger 450. Service, ride and quiet cab.

MID NORTH DAKOTA
We have both a 535 and now a new 550. The 550 with DEF uses at least 20% less fuel than the 535 with similiar implements. DEF is no big deal. We filled it up every two or three days. Our DEF pump runs off of the same power as our pick up tanks. There are fill ports for the DEF on both sides of that tractor. The 550 is the smoothest riding, most user friendly tractor I have ever driven. One stick controls shifting, shuttling, throttle, and a remote. Pair that with the Pro700 and other than driving circles around sloughs all spring, it was almost relaxing to run.

We love the tractor ( 500 quad). The ride is unreal in the new quadtracs compared to previous series. All the buttons on trottle are a nice touch. Cant say much about fuel since we never sowed anything. And I know the def is a good thing, it just added another thing into the mix. Ours doesnt have another port, just the one.

We've had mostly green tractors for a while now, and Deere's been generally ahead in cabs since the intro of the 8000 series, but the new Steiger cabs are really nice. Our next tractor may be a late model red Steiger.
