Blooming where I am planted! | We have some old grain bins we are thinking about doing something with. I've heard that if you reinforce with steel pieces or studs, you can cut out arches and make a nice gazebo. Has anyone here ever done that, or done something else with them? Seems like there' s a lot of nice material there to work with.

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | In weather like we're having now, that bin tin doesn't dissipate much heat. It tends to pass on a lot of heat instead of reflecting it. The remaining bin material after you've cut out your decorative parts can get hotter than the hubs of Hell unless there's other types of shade available. That aside, they really could be very attractive once the landscaping etc is done. Take pix.......we all wanna see!!!

There is an apartment house in Ames, IA built of bin tin. Someone wanted to do more but the city rejected the plans in the last few months. The Atrium of a building in Ankeny IA is built of bin tin. Lots of little bins litter the Iowa countryside, more after the recent high winds. The circular shape makes for strong echoes and the tin conducts heat and the galvanize is better at absorbing solar energy than radiating it so they do run hot. And on your farm probably not located for the most convenient gazebo, but might make a shed for garden machinery. Gerald J.

ECIL | Back when ostriches were the rage a couple guys bought a 1000 bu. and a 2000 bu bin to use as ostrich houses. The floors were poured after the bins were put up so they just cut them off flush with the floor. A neighbor has a couple 1000 bu bins they've used for peacock houses before.

Southern IA | In high school a bunch of guys got an old bin and turned it into a cabin. Moved it about a mile into the timber and we would all hang out there on the weekends.

East of Dowagiac Michigan | I built a 30' gazebo for a park last summer......project was sponsered by a township in memory of a local farmer who had suddenly passed. They bought a used bin for the project. I laminated the two heaviest rings I had into one double thickness ring , assembled the roof, had it raised with crane and drilled/bolted 10 hopper bin legs. edit: Project was inspired by GSI's gazebo at the IL Farm Progress Show. Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | My uncle took a small bin and made it a tractor shed. I know a guy in Old Pokey's neighborhood that bought a very small old bin to use the roof and maybe one ring to make a covered sandbox for his kids.

NW Washington | Farmshow magazine has had upteen articles about folks doing something different with old round grain bins over the years. I just read about some guy who made a root cellar and storage shed out of a small one last night. Many have been made into homes. http://www.farmshow.com/ Edited by JohnW 7/21/2011 02:46

I saw one last year while traveling that was made into a gazebo. They used the roof & 1 ring & put that up on wooden posts. In our local town several years ago a guy built a small bin then built a house onto it. Local joke is that he had a problem at night getting out of bed & peeing in a corner and that the bin is thier bedroom. Depending on size I have seen several used in various ways. From a kiln to dry wood, to storage. Just depends upn a person's imagination. But if it was me, I'd do like the other poster & take it to a salvage yard & put the money to use on something that would look nicer. JM2ยข
