Subject: CaseIH/IH 963 corn head question about the lower chain guides and a few crop pictures...

Caldwell County Kentucky
CaseIH wants $214 each for these lower gather chain guides. Ouch. The steel bushings pressed into the guides are oblong/worn. Is there another supplier for these parts? Cheaper of course than CaseIH.

Or, how could I get the metal bushings/guides out and replace them.

My lower chain support assembly that holds the lower sprocket is fairly new and not worn any. I replaced them a year or so ago.

Thanks for your info.

Attached are some crop photos just because I had the camera out.

The airplane in the last pic is my neighbor having his corn sprayed with something-fungicide/insecticide I guess.

As far as I know that is not a serviceable unit. There might be some aftermarket stuff available but don't know for sure.

I had been waiting for kooiker to respond but since he hasn't I looked up an old thread for you.

Looks like the way to go to me. I hope to try the JD blocks this fall but have not done anything yet.

Good Luck,
Dave

Now that is some good information! I really like the looks of the JD tightener versus the IH. It would appear that would be an excellent solution to the constant wearing out of the aluminum blocks. We don't have a IH or CIH head anymore but I wish I would have had this information ten or fifteen years ago! Thanks for digging that up. This is the kind of information that makes this site great.

it would take some fabrication work to make the factory steel snouts work with the JD pieces.   Might not be that hard to do though, just need some steel and a welder :-)

The Calmer snouts we put on are made to work with the JD pieces.

Had this same issue last year. We took a sawzall with a thin blade that would fit through the old bushing and cut them in two. You will cut into the assembly a small bit, but it will not affect the integrity of the unit, as the bushing has a flair in the center. After cutting the bushing and it must be cut to be removed, you can drive out the bushing. We then found bushings at TSC and cut them with a chop saw to fit. Should take you no more than an hour or two per unit to put in new bushings. We broke a few sawzall blades in the process, but it was still much cheaper. Also the new bushing will not have a flair. Just find the bushing that fits the slide and unit. Think we had $150 and a couple of days time invested. 400 acres on them last year and zero problems. Getting ready to try to rebuild the slides this year.

owning only to the fact the factory IH dividers rest ON the end of the Al. support assy, or are there other conflicts?

good stuff, thanks for the pics!

That is pretty much the only conflict.

Other than that it is just a matter of drilling holes and a little bit of cutting on the front of the stripper plates.
