wahpeton, nd
my neighbor is looking at a 2656 international loader tractor today. it looks to be in pretty decent condition. has a well built loader on it and a very heavy front axel. this looks like an industrial version of a 656. 6 cyl. gas, manual 5 sp transmission. any one have any experience with a tractor like this? good or bad!
thanks - mike

We have one that Dad bought new (early 70's?). Ours is a hydrostatic which makes it very handy for a loader tractor. All us kids learned to drive it as soon as we good push the hydrostatic pedals to make it go. I've spent a lot of time on that thing. Your right it is a semi-industrial version of the 656 so many parts are the same. The loaders on them are good and respond fast. Keeping it running cool is one main problem. Around the yard it never really was a problem but we could never use it pack the bunker or out in the field unless it was firm ground like a hay field( the hydrostatic transmission was part of the problem in soft conditions) it will even get hot going down the road on a really warm day if the radiator gets a little dirty. The front end on them is really heavy but it makes the back end light. You need to add a lot of weight to the back for things like moving snow. Check the steering cylinder for leaks. The splines on top of the spindles wore out several times on ours and are very expensive. We finally just welded ours together and haven't had any more problems. You could get it with a diesel also which would be nice. Hope this helps.

We've had a 186 hydro for a few years now and it works really well. We pull a New Holland 195 manure spreader heaped full of sand laden manure, which is very heavy, down the road easily. Pulled a 1431 discbine well too. It never "slips" or overheats. I do realize it is a different tractor than the one in question though.
