Rugby Ontario Canada | I am wondering if this tractor was any good for the size of it and wonder if it would run a 8"x 35' auger to load semis or a 8"x61' to load the wet bin . There is one for sale at a dealer an hour away he wants $3,500cdn for it . I would guess it will pull a 10 wheel H&S wheel rake ok in the field .Were the engines any good or did they have problems that I should run from this tractor. Thanks for any help

NW Washington | This is one of the rebadged tractors that AC sold for a while. This one is made in Romania by UTB/Universal. I think the 5050 was actually a Fiat. Whether this is good or bad I can't tell you. Here is a link to tractor data site with some info on the 5040. http://www.tractordata.com/td/td194.html

central wisconsin | I had one for a couple of years. They use much less fuel than others that I had owned. But there is a small problem getting parts. I had tried getting a bunch of parts to go through it fixing seeping seals and and just routine items. The only item that showed up was the radiator cap the rest of the parts were obsolete and not serviced anymore. I traded it in on a green tractor and never had parts problems again.

![]() Pittsburg, Kansas | Like the other poster said it is a UTB. That would be pretty much the same tractor as a Long 350 or 445. They were 35 and 42 pto hp respectively. I am not terribly familiar with the AC models but as I recall they were just as they came from the UTB factory and the Long tractors had a few "Americanized" things done to them (improved hydraulic pumps on later 360 and 460 models, seperate power steering reservoir on later models, reinforced sway chain bracket on 3pt - stuff like that). I have not tried to get Long parts for a long time but they sold a bunch of those tractors in certain areas of the country and Long is still in business and as of a few years ago were still importing and selling the UTB tractors so I would expect parts from them would still be available. They are a pretty decent tractor - Fiat design. Oliver also sold some of these style Fiat tractors only they came from the Fiat factory and were a slightly newer design so all the parts are not the same as the UTB's but many are. It would pull your auger fine. They are a little more prone to leaks as the Romanians were not quite as particular about machining as some and the rubber parts of that day were not as good as USA stuff. They are a good servicable tractor though and the basic design has been made for many years. It is European design so cooling is marginal if you are in a hot climate or if you have a lot of chaff to plug the radiator up. Several guys around here moved the battery to a home made box along side the frame if they used them for heavy tillage or baler work and that helped a lot, getting the battery out from in front of the radiator. Really the 3 cylinder tractors were not much of a problem, was more the 4 cylinder (Long 560, etc). If the tractor runs and starts good and everything else drives out and works ok I would say for the price it could be a good tractor. If it needs a bunch of obvious work, it is probably not a bargain at any price unless you are a scrounger and tinkerer. Should be a fair number of Longs in salvage yards by now for parts - finding them might be the problem. John

Elmira, Ontario | My eyes started burning while reading the comments. I finally remembered why. I seem to recall the exhaust fumes being terrible on those tractors (but then most diesels of that vintage didn't smell like roses). I'd want it to have vertical exhaust for sure. I never liked the 2 reverse speeds. One was always too slow, the other too fast. In our neck of the woods, there were a lot of Fiat built Cockshutt tractors. I think the 1265 was very close in design to the 5040. From that era, I have a softer spot for the AC 170/175. I had a lot of seat time on a gas 170. Nice, quiet tractor except for the rear-end howling in road gear. Well, what passed for road gear back then.

This is an old Fiat design, built for AC by Universal in Romania, early '80s. The larger 5050 is actually built by Fiat in Italy. According to this page: http://www.sphosting.com/dsl/buyersguide.html ... it ranks fairly reasonably compared to other Fiat- based tractors. Many parts are available for the 5040 here: http://dsl.sphosting.com/AC.html

Hay Wilson in TX![]() |

Little River, TX | That is not a strong endorsement just a fact. I have used it to pull a NH 315 hay baler, on a NH 1002 bale wagon as well as a NH 1003 bale wagon. That said it has always had a fuel leak, fix one and another will crop up. The tractor is wired for every country in the world and a real terror to find electrical problems. It is now a special applications machine. It has a rope wick on the front, a poor man's combination field 3 pt field cultivator & sprayer on the back. Plus use it to chase cows back to the neighbors place and as a ATV. It's biggest value is it always starts, if parked on a hill. It's value, in the shape it is in, is worth little more than scrap. Could never replace it for what I could get out of it.
