Subject: Maximum distance you can siphon water

What is Maximum distance you can siphon water, I know the maximum lift is 34 ft, but cannot find anything that gives me the maximum distance, would like to try siphoning a slough out, would have to lift it 25 feet and the distance is about a ¼ mile, I can create all kinds of drop on the output end. Think of using a 3” hose. Is this possible?

As long as you have fall below the level of the pool being siphoned distance shouldn't be a factor. Now if "below the pool" is a long distance from your dam it may be difficult to get started. The key is removal of ALL the air in line. Your height will be a challenge to start but should work. We siphoned on a 6 acre lake once that had a stopped up tube. Used 6" field tile for that project. It was a challenge primeing that thing. All tile is not perfect and a pin hole strategly placed can mess up the whole project.

I would think your plan will work. Might not run the storngest with a 25 foot lift.
Does that mean that you cant suck water more than 34 feet even if the drop is far below the water level?
Ive never th ought about that before. Atnosphere pressure is only so strong(vacuume) .....

How do you plan to start it? Long hard suck to get it started. I'd beg or borrow a pump to get it started then unhook to see if it works.

we were think of putting a pump in the line at the intake fill the hose have a valve at the output end that we can close take the pump off line and open the value to start the siphon.

We've pulled water from a 18" tile intake that was over loaded and had 4' of water standing in it. We used a 6" manure pump on a 4010 to fill a 40 acre 5' deep slough/lake in a NRCS wetland. It only took a week, we could only run the tractor at idle or the pump would suck the tile dry and lose its prime.

Know anybody with a manure wagon with a vacuum to fill it. Might have to fabricate to get the 3" hose attached. I would have better luck taking a tank of water to the lower end and forcing water up to fill the pipe. Air bubbles are a killer.

A question--How far is the highest point of the dam/whatever from your water surface? How far over the other side before your hose will be below the surface level of the water? How far are you going to draw the water level down. I was thinking 29 something was maximum vacuum? Maybe thats column inches of water? Elavation probably enters into that figure someplace. Just curiosity questions. good luck. Kinda neat to watch this work without any energy once it gets going.

Ps; You've got to watch for whirlpooling over your intake. If that happens you can lose it before you want.

I needed to drain a pond across a road through an existing culvert that was 3 ft above water level on the high side. We snaked an 8 inch plastic drain hose through the culvert with both ends hanging into the water.
We had a 1/8 inch clear plastic hose plumbed into the highest part of the 8 inch plastic drain hose and connected it to a vacuum fitting on the pickup engine(gas).
The engine vacuum pulled water up into both ends of the drain pipe untill it was full and began to flow on its own. (4 ft head of water on one side) When we started to get water in the 1/8 plastic hose, we quickly disconnected it from the pickup engine and capped it.
Do not allow the vacuum hose to put water into the engine, it can hydraulic the engine and bend a rod.

The crest is limited to a certain height, based on atmospheric pressure. At sea level, for water, it is about 30 feet, depending on that days local barometer. Try to siphon water with a lift of greater than 30 feet, and depending on the temperature of the water, it will start to boil at the top of the siphon, adding air to the system, and most likely break the siphon.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Will have some friction loss over that kind of distance, but it should work.

That should work. Wish I had ask here before messing with the tank. I never thought about doing that although thats how we prime or irrigation pump. If you use a long piece of the clear line it gives you a little more safety---yeah right -maybe about a 1/10 of a second per foot! We messed an engine up once doing that. Didn't do major damage but wouldn't run good after that. Guessed we might have warped a valve. After that we put a 4' piece 4 inch pvc in the middle. Clear intake line to the bottom , another clear line out the top to the truck motor. Not sure you can find a vac line on the newer engines.
