Subject: Adjusting SCV's, JD 4250

Culbertson, MT
Having troubles with a 4250, hydraulics drift. Disk comes up or down, loader won't stay level, etc. Is there an adjustment in the scv's? Some leakage but is likely the outer o-rings. Also, will poor tips cause this situation? Thanks!

Pull both scv's and have new valves put in and grind the seats. There is an update on the valves, the new ones have a Teflon insert inside the sealing area. Jon.

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
I could buy us both a fancy supper if I had $1 for every SCV I've rebuilt. The valves need to be replaced like Jon said. Personally, I liked the old steel valves better than the teflon, but you can't get the steel ones anymore. You used to be able to buy the seat grinding tool, but its been a long time now since they discontinued the 20-60 series style SCV. You should also reset the detents while they're on the bench. You need a dial indicator and some allen wrenches to adjust it right. Any Deere dealer should be able to do it. You can just take the SCVs to the dealer. Put new o rings in between the SCV housing and the rockshaft housing when you take them off too. Don't forget that valve # 3 has a different cam lever, so don't mix # 3 up with the other two or you'll wonder why you have to adjust the linkage. Your valves are leaking because of item #21 in the picture below.

Done my share too, but I prefer to use the old 1/4 turn on the pressure valves and 1/8 turn on the return valves. Its a lot easier and quicker with fewer lickovers in my opinion than it is using a dial indicator. You can make your own adjustment jig using the cover cap #27 in the parts shown.Hardest part is drilling and tapping a hole on angle for the hydraulic detent. Same home made jig will aalso work on both the older 10 series and 20 series SCvs.

I'd show you guys my setup for adjusting SCV's, but I'm scared one of you would steal it & get rich...way more accurate than just a 1/4 turn, way less fussy than a dial indicator...works for me...;o)
