Subject: Case IH 496 disk Good & Bad

Right now I am looking at an 496 Case IH disk at a dealership. They want $9500 for it. Its 18ft wide and looks to be in good shape. I was just wondering if there were any problems with these discs.

We have a 24.5' and it works great. They are built plenty heavy. No problems except when disking ditches with the wings up. I broke the turnbuckle that levels the disk. Operator error, not equipment problem.

I loved my 32' 496, was a good disk.  However, some told me a certain size, either 18 or 21, the wings were not heavy enough to disk level.  I didn't have that problem with the larger disk, and my information is only opinion of someone else.  It did make sense that if you had a large mid frame, and floated a small wing, there might be some problems running level.

Check all the welds for cracks on the brackets for the center lift cyls where they connect to the square tube. Have seen them pull the whole bracket off the square tube. Check the pivot on the wing wheels, because the cyl is off set it puts side pressure on the pivot and it gets loose.

We have owned a 32' 496 for several years. We bought a Remlinger one bar harrow to go with it and it does a pretty good job. I would suggest going with mounted roller harrow though. They seem to a excellent job. As far as the 496 goes, it is a solid disk. Take time to rebuild. Be sure you have a forklift handy. Easy to maintain and service.

For the price you listed it would be hard to beat. Sure would be better than buying new.

I own a 496 20 ft with 9 inch spacing. It does a good level job ina field that had been cultivated, but in a field that didn't have some ridges the wings would want to ridge. I'am looking for a 22 ft disk to replace it.

The main frame, pull tongue, hubs, lift axle and other parts for the 18' disk were desigend to work with some wider models of the 496 disk. The 18' model should not put a lot of stress on these parts so they should last a long time. If you have problems getting the wings to level, you can bolt a solid bar across the three frames and keep the disk level. This will make the disk ridgid and the bar must be removed to fold the wings. Howerer, this is probably the worst problem you can have with this disk. Good luck with your decision.

As TORQUE said check the wing wheel pivots. The originals were problematic. On mine the pivot pin froze up and wouldn't take grease. The holes the pin went through on the axle assy. were also wallowed out pretty bad. With help from a neighbor the pin on mine had to be cut out. Then I took the axle assy. to a welding shop to have the mounting holes bored and bushed. I had to replace the pin as well, naturally. Otherwise there is a kit available to replace the assy. with an updated version. You can't get one side only, they are only available as a set for both wings from the dealer and will set you back $420 minimum. That was last fall when I priced it out. I had bought the disc new and figure if it's lasted me this long the fix will last just as long and I'll probably be retired by then. See if the one you're looking at has been updated.

Is the disc you're looking at on 7.5" or 9" spacings? The 7.5" is good for finishing but not very good for fall corn stalks. The 9" is better for fall stalks but not for finish work.

Watch and inspect the wing wheel pivots, I have an 18'er and I will have to rebuild this fall.

This sucker will go in the ground but when really cutting hard the narrow discs need weight on the wings.

We had a 24 1/2' w 7 1/2" spacingsfor several years that we traded off last winter. I never really cared for the disc that much. Never leveled as well as the 490 we had before it IMO & was a pita to adjust. Seemed like if I got the cener section to cut like I wanted the wings would gouge. Get the wings set right & the center section didn't cut deep enough. Ours did have the dual wheel option on the wings.

Why do they have the blades off the wings on both disks in the photo?

$9500 is not an outstanding price, but probably fair.  I have a 24 ft setting in the shed we haven't even gotten out this year I'd sell for that price.

we had a 22' rockflex. more problems than it was worth. we got the run around from our dealer. we kept breaking the bearings on the holders. found out from another dealer they had lots of problems with that model and had a class to help solve the problem. we traded it for a krause rockflex. the 496 did a nice job in the field, just wasnt built heavy enough in that size

Thanks for the offer but I only have a case 2090 to pull it with. The blades are off for transportation.
