| If I remember right this is next to impossible for the average tool set. Is the back bolt, the one you can't see of course, a different head configuration? 12 point real shallow socket or am I thinking of something else. Of course the front side needs the real shallow depth but a skinny extension lets you break it loose, but can't back it out hardly any with a regular depth socket. Any advice appreciated.
Solenoid must be bad / stuck or something. 12 volts to the activation terminal gets no response.

| To get the starter off you need a special wrench. Or special powers, but the wrench is easier to obtain. |

Callao Missouri | 12pt 9/16 socket with wobble extension. Pull starter back as you unscrew the bolt so as not to bottom out your socket in the space provided. Last bolt out first in. Its pretty easy to get out I don't even use the special wrench. Jon |

Lenawee Co Michigan | I bought that special wrench 30 years ago for the 3020/4020 and have used it many times. It's a 9/16 12 point box wrench crooked as a dog's hind leg. |

| If I could get it started I'd bring it up there and "let" you do it. You aren't that far away. But its sit'in in the middle of a manure hauling project so guess'in you wouldn't wana make a "house call". *joking* Think I'll just plant or sometrhing else until it rains and makes the job a little nasteir. Thanks for the info. Don |

Mid-Missouri | Usually we could use the 12 point on a ujoint but on a recent 4050 strarter, I could not get it to work. The JD wrench worked just fine. Put an Abilene gear reduction starter on cheaper than any other option I looked into, and better yet, no special tools needed for it! |

NW MINN | . I had the same problem on a 4850 and the guys here said get the wrench. They were right. |

| Every JD tractor owner should have this in his toolbox.

| Have you tried to put jumper cable to the starter, by pass the solenoid .....I made a wrench from 2 cheap sockets, the main one a 9/16 and the other one any one as small....took and laid them side by side and welded them together... it works better if the 9/16 is ground shorter than the other......this works similar to the special wrench, using a long extension and having to take off and reposition each time....Oh yes can you remove the solenoid without removing the starter, you can on a 4040 and a 4230 with denso starter.... |
