Subject: JD rate controller won't work on my sprayer says salesman??

Southwestern Texas Panhandle
Last year I ran a Trimble EZ boom to control my sprayer. This year I'm going to use my tractor with a 2600 display and am wanting to install a John Deere rate controller. My dealer came out and said that it wouldn't work with my current setup on my sprayer. He basically said it was to old. It's a 2002 model, I don't believe they are putting much effort into it. It is all raven controls and was controlled with a Raven 400 before the EZ boom. I was able to just plug the EZ boom into the connector and go. I haven't seen the JD rate controller but the dealer was saying they need to cut wires and tie it in, but my rate controllers are wired in separately instead of together and they don't know how to make it work. Attached is a picture of my sprayer controls.

Thanks,

I have a mix of newer and older products on my planter that all tied into a Raven 440. I only needed one cable to convert the Deere controller to match the plug that used to go to the 440. I'd have to take a look at what the adapter did if you want to know more.

The attached thread shows how I made a JD RC work in a Rogator, it includes a pin out for the RC, hope it helps. Anything is possible, just might have to put more thought into it.

This can most certainly be done.

Your picture shows a Raven Flowmeter and a Raven control valve along with TeeJet On/Off valves.

The Deere Rate controller typically terminates in a 37 Pin connector which for the most part follows Raven's wiring pattern. I believe there is an adapter available from Deere to change the 37 pin connector to a 16 pin Amp connector which you probably have. This would be the easiest solution.

The worst case scenario might involve some rewiring but even that would not be very complex. This Spring I have made at least 20 wiring harnesses to go from Deere Rate controllers to Raven components like you have. We use Banjo On/Off valves but otherwise these situations would be identical.

Many of these will be going on corn planters for starter fertilizer, some for Accu-flow NH3 and some for sprayers. On planters the On/Off valves are often remotely mouted on the wings with the control valve and flowmeter in the center. The only difference with these is that the boom On/Off wires need to be longer to reach out to the wings.

Your dealer is not working very hard for you.

This can be done with ease! You have a couple different options. You can get PF90621 Hardi Spray Adaptor Harness and wire it up. I would need to see the other end of your wiring but I would assume that since you have all raven and as long as you haven't altered that plug then you can just use, PF90599. It is just an adaptor plug from GS2 Rate Controller to Raven Sprayer Controlls. Then you need 0330PC Rate Controller ( comes with wiring harness ), PF90550 Switch and power harness, PF90586 Front Extension harness and possibly a center extension PF90588 depending on the length of wire you need.

Thanks for all the replies. It appears this most certainly can be done. Attached is a picture of where my wire hooks into the raven 440 & EZ boom. Ted, if I understand correctly you are saying that all I need to do is get a John Deere adapter to go from the 37 pin on the rate controller to the 16 pin on my current setup? Even their AMS guy didn't know how to do it and this is a large dealership... However they do have a "new sprayer" on the lot, surely that wouldn't be the case!

From that pic the PF90599 would be the correct harness.

Yes, this is the standard cable from Raven. I can't tell exactly from the picture but I see one more pin that I might normally expect. There was some confusion on some sprayers as to where the system picked up the power to operate the valves. Some took it from Pin 16 which is always hot. Some took it from Pin 14 which is hot only when the console Power is On.

The Deere 37 to 16 adapter cable (I'm not familiar with it since we always make our own) should do the trick.

If the valves don't operate properly check the power situation that I mention above. One pin may need to be moved.
