Subject: Putting the C15 back together...need some help

I'm installing new liners in my C-15. Pinhole in #1 cylinder. Had a few questions. I didn't pay attention when we pulled the rods out. They are labeled with the cylinder numbers scratched into one side of the rod by the bolt. Does it matter which way they are installed? The guy helping me said the numbers usually go towards the oil cooler on a Detroit.

Also-
What are the torque specs for the

Headbolts
mains
rods
oil pump

Thanks

The bolts that are marked "X" are 216 mm (8.5 inch) long. The lengths of the remaining bolts are 194 mm (7.6 inch) long.

Apply 6V-4876 Lubricant to the bolt threads and both sides of the washers. Tighten the bolts in the following step sequence:

  1. In a numerical sequence, tighten bolts 1 through 26.

    Torque for bolts ... 270 ± 15 N·m (200 ± 11 lb ft)

  1. In a numerical sequence, tighten bolts 1 through 26.

    Torque for bolts ... 450 ± 15 N·m (330 ± 11 lb ft)

  1. In a numerical sequence, again tighten bolts 1 through 26.

    Torque for bolts ... 450 ± 15 N·m (330 ± 11 lb ft)

Torque-turn tightening method for main bearing cap bolts

Use the following procedure in order to tighten the main bearing cap bolts:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the threads of the bolts.

  1. Tighten the bolts first on the bearing tab side (1) of the cap.

    Torque for bolts ... 260 ± 14 N·m (190 ± 10 lb ft)

  1. Tighten the bolts on the opposite side (2) .

  1. Put a mark on each bolt and each cap.

  1. Tighten the bolts on the opposite side (3) from the mark to angle (A) .

    Angle (A) ... 120 ± 5 degrees (2 flats)

  1. Tighten the bolts on the bearing tab side (4) of the cap from the mark to the following value.

If you have the connecting rods, with two dowel pins and holes(between cap and rod), THEN the dowels go to the front of the engine.

Thank you CATGUY for being so fast.

I don't have the rods in front of me, but I can't remember a dowel on the rods or caps. I am 180 miles away from them right now.

If you read #2, on this rod bolt spec page, it says the "rod numbers" SHOULD BE on the side with the bearing tabs(tangs) , IF that is correct, then the tangs/tabs/numbers should be on the oil cooler side.

The old 3406 engine "rule of thumb" was rod bearing tangs OPPOSITE the camshaft.
(oil cooler is opposite the cam, too)=== ( bearing tangs on oil cooler side)

Thank goodness, for "Copy and Paste", otherwise I could see myself getting burned out, sometimes.

Gotta remember, I glean info from this board too.  John Deere stuff, planter stuff, crop stuff, precision stuff(just trying to learn more about precision ag)
