Subject: Tilting to Non-tilting 5th wheels

NW Illinois
Has anyone made a simple and cheap locking mechanism for a tilting Holland 5th wheel?

I see you can buy kits from Hollands to convert them, but I would pre fur parts from my scrap pile.

Should I be worried about doing something that's not DOT approved?

Two be used on a 22 ft 1/4 frame, so 73,280 will GVWR.

TIA Dave

You can make your own fairly easily. If you weld some rectangles of 1/2" steel {say 1 1/2 high by 2" long) with 1/2" hole on edge under each corner of the fifth wheel then make your blocks to sit down on top of these you can put a pin in them to hold them on and they are easy to take off

Not talking about turning on end dumps the hitch pivots so it will flex when dumping. You have to lock the fifth wheel on the truck so they don't slap as you start and stop.

Find some solid blocks that fit under the front and back with very little slop. Weld some sort of "C" shaped rod or bar to them so you just hold it up and slide it in from the side. Rig up some sort of place you can drop in a pin to keep them from sliding out. Doesn't have to be strong the strain is all on the blocks you just need to keep them from sliding out. Do the same on both sides.

Pipe and pins work but sometimes the welds break and it can be a real pita to get them in and out. BTDT. Remember you will have to take them back out every time you go to a regular trailer.

Send me an email with a phone number if you want me to explain it better.
