Subject: Power shift Vs. CVT


It seem to me that AGCO's CVT transmissions have evolved and is the new basis of all Combine and tractor transmissions. What makes it so much better then the Power shift and or Hydrostatic style. We recently sold a new T7 with the CVT and i am very excited to get it in and test drive it.

Actually they've been out overseas for 10 years plus.... deere makes it sound like its the greatest thing once slice bread and case OS kinda like ya its nice. If u want to spend the money......

I like the concept just not sure if its all that beneficial more so seems like a luxury

The premier transmission for many applications, not only in ag but many other sectors as well. Remember, there are countless ways to design a continuously variable type transmission, so they are NOT all created equally. AGCO's, which came to them ala the acquisition of Fendt, is a great transmission for a number of reasons. Mechanically, they are so much simpler than any powershift and even other CVTs. Fewer moving parts, gear sets are in constant loaded state, no clutch packs, can be smaller in size for easier packaging, and has its own dedicated oil supply. These are all very solid design attributes. From an application standpoint, the engine and transmission can communicate to ensure peak operating efficiency. In effect, the transmission can deliver the correct speed/reduction ratio all the time without having to "pick" from a finite number of gear sets and combinations. Now this is most easily realized in a draft situation but even the versatility and convenience putting around the yard is nicer.

I watch a few video's on the new T7 and have read about the efficiency being that there are not set intervals for the PTO hp to Engine speed, also combined with easy driver operation. What are the down sides to the CVT?

I have run cvt transmissions in 5 different agco tractors for 7 years now and i would never go without one. We have never had any problems and my dealership said they have only had to work on one since they came out and that was a problem from the factory. By far the best and most reliable transmission i have ever seen. Case and deere cvts do not compare(yes i have run both). The best part is you can stick anyone in them. My banker father in law is terrible in tractors and last fall ran the grain cart for several days after a quick 5 minute lesson.

The New Holland/CIH CVT works off a planetary in front of a four speed transmission with two clutches. The ring gear is not stationary (thus, CVT), but the speed and direction of the ring gear are controlled by a hydro motor which has almost zero load on it. When the transmission shifts, it will switch clutch engagement. Its operation ensures there is little to no slippage between the clutch change, and is a completely seamless shift. It is a more fuel efficient transmission and less power is lost through it. There is not a lot that can go wrong with it that I can see. We haven't had any issues with them and CNH has had very few problems. In its infancy I was told they had an issue with a snap ring coming off and they have since made the snap ring groove deeper. Maybe some other CNH techs will chime in and say they know of some problems with them, but so far they have been flawless for us.

New holland is coming out with T-8 with a CVT this fall.

Biggest difference between all the CVT/IVT's are the complexity. Case/NH CVT has 6 clutches, Deere has 4, AGCO has 0. Many more gears in the Case/NH & John Deere as well.

Did the CNH CVT come from the acquisition of Steyr? That company had CVT for a long time, not sure if it was before Fendt, though.
