NC Iowa | already learnin'.. I didn't know they did Detroit in 4020..How's it perform?.. My 4620 powered is wonderful..Set at 175 hp..I put a smaller turbo on it-made a tractor out of it.. very quick and spunky....I got the turbo from a tractor-puller.. Back in the day when I used it in the field, I used the turbo boost gauge to judge how hard it was pulling...Radiator would keep up at 14 psi max (140 hp) With this engine/turbo setup, I started calibrating it at 10 psi on the dyno-100hp...Held true up to 175 hp(17psi)...ate one ps tranny and one complete rear-end,though.. If there are any 4620 guys out there that want to wake up the tractor, I should be able to figure out what the turbo is that I have on it..Makes the tractor virtually smokeless at full throttle. Oops, I forgot about the 5020. I know a guy who had a 5020 Detroit.. It had 300 hp, but only wide-open.. no lugging, and that NOISE!! He didn't like it either..He got pretty good money for it, if I recall.. |

| Yeah mine had 325 hp the last time we had it on a dyno. Its parade ready paint wise, and has a JD roll-guard cab (which makes it all the louder sitting in the seat) The first time I drove it was when I brought it home from my neighbors. I had ear plugs in and also trapshooting hearing protectors on , but after 20 minutes my ears were ringing. I've had lots of lookers at buying it , but nobody with the money I want for it. |

Roseglen, North Dakota | There were only (2) 8960/70's. Believe Jon still has one; other one ended up in Michigan. I think they done right at 300 8850's. Repower guy told me they quit because kit prices were going to go up and most people didn't want to put that much money in tractors over 20 years old. |

SE Iowa | Drove that 65 - before they put the hood back on.....stopped in a few times while it was in process.....after they finished it they pulled a scraper with it for a while.....not sure where it's at now....
Drove an 8960 12 spd powershift that they'd repowered and the thing ran 24 mph....nobody knew why....I wanted it bad......it had 3 pt, pto, and all..... edit - there were more than two 89's...maybe just three - but more than two...there were the two big horses he did that were heavily modified (I think they were both 8970's) and I know the one I'm referring to was just 450 hp or so....now I'm doubting myself and wondering if it was a 87 instead of an 89....never mind.....idk.....
I wish I could go back and buy that 89? as well as the last 4960 repower they had....they had them both around there for a long time....

| Would your tractor be for sale? |
|
|
|
| I sold it in 2013 via Polk Auctions to Keane Thummel from Bedford, IA. He sold it a year later on his dispersal auction. I heard it went to Texas, but not sure who bought it. |
