Alberta Canada | Whats the major differences between Peterbilt 377s, 378s, and 379 day cabs? Looking at a 377 to put a grain box on. It has a 10spd and M11 cummins. All I can see is the hood style is different, cabs seem to be the same. Any reason a guy should look at a 378 or 379 instead.

Barley Belt west of the fifth Meridian | A 379 will still be worth what you paid for it 10 years from now. the other two models will be worth a lot less. You are correct in saying the cab interior is the same.

The Breakfast Club | Same cabs. 378 has a fiberglass hood, 379 is aluminum w/the rivets...and seems like the cab on a 378 sits up an inch higher or so than a 379. 378 and more so a 379 will be higher priced is all.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | The set back axle 378 and 377 models are not very popular and don't resell well, standard 378 and short hood 379 hold their values OK, and the 379exhd trucks arguably have the highest resale values of any OTR trucks. 379 extended straight trucks can be very long wheelbase, so need more room for turning. A 377 can work as well as any other, and you should be able to get one a good bit cheaper than the other models.

west central illinois | A 377 has a set back front axle. That would be a deal braker for me, servicing them is a pain I have an ih 9400 and hate it for that reason it also seems to get stuck more often cause the truck we have the front end seems to sink in soft ground faster because you are carrying more weight on the front axle. we have been running our 5th wheel all the way back on it to try and keep the weight down as much as possible.

you can also get a 377 with a set forward axel, they came both ways.

NC ND | If you go with the long nose can you get the weight distributed in the box to axle out correctly? Wondered if the set back axle didn't work better in that regard. Length of box and whether you put a third lift axle obviously affect everything also. Majority of the trucks with boxes are set back steer axles or binders with short hoods around here. Cheaper price might cause that as much as anything??

North Battleford Saskatchewan |
379short hood can take up to a 20ft box 379 extended can only take a 19ftbox or bring out the torch! Your front axle weight will be slighty over on extended vs way over on short have 379 short fuel tanks behind step(cab) have 378 fuel tanks are the steps both trucks are exellent grain haulers
Edited by jdchipup 2/9/2011 08:39

NW Iowa | We run a 377, and I actually looking at a second 377 now. Don't have any experience with the 378/379, but we use ours for hauling from field to town/home to town. Doesn't get around too bad, not the tightest turning truck, but you get used to it. I like the fact that you can pick up a 377 a bit cheaper than the others, but it still gets the job done.

Se. Sk. | i would go for the 378 0r the 379 short hood....378 would be prefered as they do sit alot higher for field use. .....i have a 375 that sat pretty low so i added another leaf on the front, besides raising the front 4" it made the truck much more stable when driving loaded. the m11 is a pretty bullet proof engine but i would stay away from the 10 speed...13 or 18 spd would be much better

Alberta Canada | Even on a 20ft box a 10spd isnt great? Hows the m11 compare to a n14? I think its around 300hp, should be enough to pull a pup witha 24ft box maybe. Other than that it would be just grain.

Se. Sk. | i think m11s start around 330hp and go up to 410hp....not sure on n14...considerably more than m11 though.......i have a 10 spd on one truck....had id it for 10 yrs and still find it a bitch to shift with a load on in field. m11 will pull a pup....will have its hands full at 300hp though

Alberta Canada | Is your 10spd on a 20ft tandem or in a semi? Is it just hard to shift when its soft? Worried about soft fields and such getting started taking a full gear instead of 1/2.

Se. Sk. | 20ft tandem...trying to shift a gear loadedin field is very tricky...wouldn't want to blow a shift!....find it hard to shift at any time compared to 18sp though

Blackton AR | That has to be in your tranny. I have a Fuller 10 speed and it's the easiest shifting truck I've ever been in. I also know of many more 10 speeds around me that shift very easy and the 10 is pretty evenly spaced out to not strain between shifts.

North Battleford Saskatchewan | We learned how to drive 9spd + 13speed tranys in 78 L9000 13spd. 671 detroit @210hp 650bu wheat soft fields! 80 L9000 9spd 671detroit @ 210hp 675-700 bu wheat soft fields with little hp you got to be right on the gears or start over Many times hired so called truck drivers they would't make it out of the field without blowing a gear.

Iowa | soft fields pick a gear and wait till the road to shift. as for the 377 cheaper then 378 379 but if you work on your own truck that short hood takes away from room under hood makes it hard to get to stuff on the back of the motor or the transmision bolts. Iv had both and the 379 is way easyer to put a headgasket in or thake the tranny out of. just more room
