Farmland, IN | Looking at a Freightliner Classic with a 475hp ISX Cummins engine...don't know much about these engines, wondering what the consensus was on 'em. My buddy says they are a good engine, but the throttle response is not real good. All I have been around is a 3406B, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! TA

SW North Dakota | I used an 06 ISX last year, hauling heavy up to 130,000. This one possibly didn't have the overhead set right, but low end power was good. Anthing after 1500 rpm's and it didn't do much. Jake brake seemed useless. Local farmer has a 2002 ISX put over 25,000 into it and it still doesn't run right, let a bad injector go to long.

![]() | Emissions controls make them a little doggy. Dunno much about them specifically, but, they are based on the N-14 s, and they sure were good.

Texas | I dont like them ,plenty of trucks around with 60 series detroits .That is what id get . I would not call it a boat anchor ,But we never seem to have one that runs "right ". It is a useable engine , but i dont like how they start and run . Tommy

Texas | It is a big block , but it shares no parts with a N-14 . N-14 is alot better engine , ISX is overhead cam , and diffrent block and head . An older classic (with the riveted doors ) would not be my choice , if it is the old style cab . Old style classic and fld cabs are very poor .Dash will break ,doors will sag ,glove comp. will fall out . A century with a detroit would be 1000 times better than a classic with an ISX . Alot of people need the "big truck " look and a century does not have that , but should get at least 1 mpg more , likley 2mpg more . The pete"s and big hood classic"s ,kw"s look good ,but it comes with a cost . Tommy Edited by tommyw-5088 2/2/2011 12:01

Leeds, North Dakota | Agree with Tommy, p''s poor desighn by Cummins, correct me if I'm wrong, trying to get weight down on engine, thus not the big boys, m-11 not a good track record either, darn emissions, sounds good on paper, didn't work out worth a snit, Scott.

Central South Dakota | I have an 06 ISX, going to end up putting a new water pump on just because every time it gets below 30 degrees the damn thing leaks out of the o-rings. Poor design if you ask me. Cummins says it has been updated, but have heard that I am not the only one with this problem.

central mn | Is that the same motor that they use in the older, bigger New Holland Tj's and the Case IH Stx's. If so are they a problem there verses the 855 or N14?

SW KS, near Dodge City | ISX came out in '98 I think, but I see a lot of trucks w/ 2000-2001-02 model years being advertised as having the N-14. Could that be possible, and if so, how do you tell them apart from pictures?

sw corner ia. | thank you, tommy, for your experienced opinions which I value quite a lot, and for letting us know what is going on in the real world. You must see every crazy disaster that could ever happen on this planet.

Texas | dvswia - 2/2/2011 14:21 thank you, tommy, for your experienced opinions which I value quite a lot, and for letting us know what is going on in the real world. You must see every crazy disaster that could ever happen on this planet. We do see almost every kind of failure on a truck engine , Nothing special about my knowledge ,just lots of trucks at our terminal . Company runs trucks to 500,000 miles as the trade scedule , things occur and we get a few at 800k miles ,Normally the old detroit 60 series runs as good as new at those miles . I think the ISX started in 1998 ,but i could be wrong , the trucks models we had were 99 models, i dont really keep up with things our company does not use . The most shocking / and sometimes disgusting part of my job is how dirty some people live in their trucks .That is the only part me and my coworkers really complain about . Im sure ready to go work on some trucks ,im off tuesday and and wedensday this week and it is icy and very cold ,staying in house . Thanks for the vote of confidence , Tommy Edited by tommyw-5088 2/2/2011 15:55

sw corner ia. | I know what you speak of on how some (not all) road drivers live in their cabs. I peddled ltl casual 10 years for yellow locally and sometimes you needed gloves to hang onto that greasy wheel that just came in. sometimes they looked like brand new too, but you just never forget the bad ones. the company didn't help much, it after I left that they gave us guys anything with air or powersteering. One seat, no radio. but, they were after the absolute cheapest cost/mile and you don't do that with a shiny pete.

What year of ISX ? Pre 08 had LOTS of EGR problems .It seems that either the ISX 's either have a jake that works great or they're just worthless .I had one into MCH twice in a month for the jake and it still was terrable . I agree The classics leave a lot to be desired to for holding together. If you've been driving a Cat for very long you'll be completely pissed off shifting a Cummins.
