I was wondering why I don't hear much talk about Mack trucks on this board. I'm sure there are some that run them. I'd like to hear your thoughts, pro or con. I must admit I hadn't much considered Mack but after looking around I'm considering it. Trying to sort through all the dealer talk on what's best and keep hearing about how good the E7 engine is. Might take a test drive of an '02 CH613 with the E7/427 and a 10 speed for hauling grain. Thoughts? TIA, Joe.

One of the best things about a mack, IMO is the engines. We run three of them and they use little to no oil and rarely leak any. They also start good in cold weather.

On the flip side, if you are a tall guy, they don't have a lot of leg room.

Overall I am happy with them. I would put some merit in my decision as to how close a dealer is to you as well.

Good Luck

We run 2 1989 R 690ST day cabs with the E6 engines, start real easy in cold temps and have lots of power, and are economical on fuel, have been good dependable trucks for us, we use them to haul hay, ussually heavy loads in soft fields. My uncle and cousin run a couple macks too, think they are the E7 engines, and like them. Terry

We used to have 3 95 mack's they were good trucks, and parts weren't real bad for them either. Cabs can be kind of scrunched if your tall. Ours were 300 and one 350. I wouldn't be afraid of one.

Texas/New Mexico Stateline

I drove one for my father in law a few years back. Things I like are the easy starting, seem to be built just a little heavier (hood, doors) like others said never used oil. It was a 1998 E7 454. Pulled like no body's business. It was a little hard on fuel, and the interior was not quite as nice as a Peterbilt. This truck had the condo cab and I DID NOT like it with our windy area. It had too much sway going down the road. It would wear you out in no time.

Macks are good driving, easy starting, dependable all around with lots of grunt power for the hp rating. In addition I believe they have maintained a good appearance for years unlike alot of other brands. The only downfall in my opinion is the parts are more specialized to the Mack truck and less available at a nearby NAPA>

I have an 04 model like you are considering. Same engine, I am over 6 feet tall and find it comfortable to drive.Engine seems stout pulling 90,000 lbs. down the hiway. In La. we can get a seasonal permit to do that kind of weight. The truck I have is air ride suspension, cab and seat. It rides really nice, comparable to my Pete. I have only had it two years but no real problems so far or dislikes. As stated earlier dealer location is important because sooner or later you are going to be there.

We have the entire Toys "R" Us fleet which is all Mack on 40,000 mile oil drain intervals and are getting a million miles before a major overhaul. Rock solid bullet proof trucks. Not real fancy like a Pete or KW but more of a working man's truck!

we have had good luck with mack trucks. No over the road jobs but have two tri-axles that do all the grain hauling. An old 79 with double stick and 96 with 18 speed both do a very good job. They tend to be a little heavy if being light is a concern.

We have a 96 CH 613 with an E7 350 engine. An overhaul was done at 989,557 miles. It now has around 1,250,000 miles on it. The hour meter broke at 32,000 hours. Transmisson and rears are all Eatons. I too have hear many good comments about the E7.

I'm in complete agreement with what others have said. The truck was in my shop for several weeks for routine maintenance and there was not one spot of oil on the floor from a leaking engine.

Drove a 95 small sleeper w/a mack 350 and 9speed for 6years. Had around 700000 when they replaced it. Frtl Century day cab with a 430 Detroit and 10 speed. Dang thing was 1700# heavier. Mack rode better and queiter cab. If I had my choice I would take the Mack. Now drive a 04 Mack day cab part time hauling grain locally. Had 400000 miles when we got it. Had to have some repairs made but think it's good to go now.

CH cabs have much more room than the R's did. We have some '09 CXU's, I am 6'3 and it was the first truck I didn't have to slid the seat all the way back. The only duds mack had were the Acet engines. The EGR were a PIA. The other key is the Mack trans and rear ends. We will never own another fuller/roadranger and never had any vendor rear ends. We have MP7's with Allisons which are excellent. JoBob, We have 4-98 & 99 Ch 613's 355 maxi cruise, Mack 12 spd., 4.17 Mack rears on camels, wet kits 1- 98 same specs. on Air all 169 wb. for sale$ 17.5-18.5 all bought new w/ maintaince history email in profile. Also have 2-97 same spec on air with fuller 9 spd. Email in profile.

We have had several Macks, and I liked them all. Started with a 237 and five speed , all Mack. Pulled a 30' trailer locally OK, but I wouldn't have wanted to go to the city with one. Had an '89 R model with a 350 and the Mack 9 speed that was my favorite. Still have an '85 with the 350 and the Mack 12 speed (not the two stick) that we recently put a dump bed on...still starts good and good power. Also still have an '03 CH613 with the 427. We pull a Timpte hopper and it handles the hills going to the river in Cincy just fine. I do not like the Fuller 10 speed in it, though. Nice drive, nice riding truck. It actually rides nicer than our two Petes. The petes have more power, and I really like the 13 speed transmissions, but they definately ride rougher than the Mack. We have had less trouble with the Macks than with the Petes...nothing major either way, and the Petes have a few more miles, but have had to replace alot of minor stuff on the Petes. Bottom line...we like our Petes, but would buy another Mack.
