Subject: Does anybody have a Clear Span Fabric Structure?

I was looking through a farmtek magazine that we got in the mail and come across these. Got to thinking that we have a barn that is going to need a lot of work pretty soon and it might just be easier and cheaper to put one of these up. Anybody else had any experiance with these. There would be cattle in this building. Right now we have it open on one whole side for the cattle, but with these from the way I understand you could only have the ends open. Probably would have to do some rearranging to make it work. If anybody does have one or know of anybody that does, I'd just like to know how they handle fairly strong wind and how you like them. Any details about them would be appreciated. Thanks, Cody

I put a small one up for hay storage 24' x 48'.  The fabric has lasted in the W Kansas winds ok.  The only problem I have is their hardware sucks.  Trying to tighten up the bolts holding the arches to the cross runners and my son and I were snapping bolts.  Sooo, don't tighten as hard.  Problem then became that as the wind works the fabric, the arches start to move since the clamping mechanism to hold the runners isn't tight enough.  You will either need to buy better bolts on your own, or use self drilling screws to hold the clamps in place.  The other problem is the bolts to hold the arches to the foot.  The galvanized carriage bolt with lock washer and nut just work loose and the structures sways in the wind.  Simple solution is to buy a good machine bolt and use locknuts instead.  I have no complaints on the tubes and the fabric.

I have a 250' Farmtek Beefmaster that is open on the south side with bunks for feeding.  Otherwise you are correct only the ends are normally open, however if you are not going to keep the cattle confined in the building you could use any of the buildings with a 10' high pony wall and leave it open on one side.

I have one. If I put up another one, it will probably be a silverstream.

We have several 3 for hay/straw, and a 30x90 that is on a 8' pony wall and open to the south for the cattle to walk outside to the bunk. We have had the first one for about 12 years. Still a good building. If i need to replace the tarp, I can get it for .50 per square foot of the building. Cheaper than I could put anything else on. I have built and sold probably a couple dozen since we built our first one. We sell Silverstream Shelters in our area. Not real agressive, but if someone is interested, we will see if we can work something out. We have had good luck with working with them. Not sure on other manufacturers, just have not worked with anybody else, so I can't comment.

So, what you want to do would work fine. Just set it on a pony wall 10' high. I would put ours up at least a foot higher, to account for snow, ice, etc. that builds up this time of year. Also our skidloaders keep getting bigger and do not clear where the others did. They work well for us, I would put up another one for livestock if I needed more room. Winds have not been a problem for us, we have had some in the 50 - 60 mph range, and no real problems.

Hope that helps.

Does the silerstream use ratchets to tighten the tarp or some other system?

Yes and No.

On the truss arch buildings, the ratchet is standard equipment.
On the laminated wood arch, and the single pipe buildings, the standard equipment for tightening is rope. I have never used this system, I always quote and order with the pipe and ratchet kit. It makes tightening SO much easier.

I have a 30x70 "Super Structure" with a "Calhoun" tarp cover. The hoops are Truss type with double pipes with gussets welded between them. I have it on a 8 ft. pony wall. The Trusses are on 10ft centers. The west side is closed with metal siding with 3 vent doors/windows. On the east side I enclosed every other opening between the posts with tongue n' groove siding. This building works great. On September 14th, 2008 we had a horrible wind storm. 60-70 mph winds for more than 5 hrs. This building never moved a fraction of an inch.

One of the big advantages I feel is the overhead room. If I ever decide to quit raising cattle I can use it to park machinery in. The heighth at the center is 21 ft. The air stays fresh in this building as well.

I have a friend whose husband works for FarmTek selling the Clear Span buildings. They put one up for themselves to use as a riding arena and it seems very nice. My uncle has several Sioux hoop buildings and they all seem to be fairly durable. Not sure which brand is best but the hoop buildings seem to be a nice concept.

Main benefits I can see to a wood arch building, is that it is quite customizable. Add more perlins, etc. Just nail them up, the metal buildings are a little tougher to customize.
I have only sold 1 wood truss building, and their reason was that if the tarp failed, they thought that using tin instead would be an option. It would be an option, not the option I would choose, but those are the potential advantages I see of the wooden structures.

We are looking at clear span building for our beef cattle. Do they hold up well and is there anything you’d want to do different?
