North West IA/western AZ | Air seat loses air too quickly, I pulled it apart and found the switch has an oring where the air is let out. I'm thinking turn it over and grease it up, it'll be like new. Now I need to know what grease won't degrade the o ring. TIA |

| Di-electric grease (non hardening silicone), silicone spray, or vegetable oil. Petro oil is considered bad for rubber. Depends on a the material that the O-rings are made from. Rings on air systems are often buna-N as air is not that hard on them. |

EC Nebraska | I have been told not to use vegetable oil on o-rings. Parts man was insistent that corn oil was the only thing that should be used. Before this I wasn't aware that you could buy corn oil in the store. It should be located right next to the vegetable oil.
Can anybody explain why vegetable oil would eat at the rubber and corn oil won't? |

SE Michigan | Is what we use on all fuel system O-rings for assembly, My day job is a fuel system Engineer at Bosch. Not sure where to get it, we buy 5-gal at a time and just use a mist for O-ring assembly on all fuel products all O-ring types.
I suspect youcould find it on google......... |

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | I use gasket lube made for slip joint PVC irrigation pipe, works great and I already had a large bucket of it.
Seen one of the local mechanics uses K Y... it is supposed to be safe for rubbers... ;) |

Corydon, IA | Napa made a product called syl gluide. It was a silicone grease. I always use that on o rings sealing air. If you have o rings sealing oil, use the oil that they are sealing. If you have a seal sealing grease, use the grease it seals. If you have orings sealing antifreeze such as cylinder liner o rings in an engine block, use water based lube, such as soap or liner or ring lube like deere sells unless the installation instructions call for something else. |

Central Kansas | Don't laugh.......had an old time mechanic that had a tube of "Brilcream"(sp), the hair conditioner in his tool box. Said it was the best, safest lube for O-rings. Showed me one time at his shop and it worked like magic. I haven't looked for any in quite a few years......betting they don't make it anymore. |

What about brake fluid? Seems like it should not degrade rubber o rings.
Depends on what fluids the O ring material is designed for.
An O ring designed for oil will swell when submerged in brake fluid. It used to be an old trick to dump a little brake fluid in a leaky old power steering system to swell the seals to stop leaks. |
