Central Kansas | Got to thinking the other day about the first tractor cabs that IH installed on there tractors. I believe they started with the 06' series back in the early 60's. They were white in color, had straight sidewalls and were no wider than the operators platform. I'm guessing some company built them for IH. What was the companies name? Seems like I remember that they didn't last too long before the Excel "flared cab" came out at the start of the 56' series.
The name of the company and post any pictures of the 06'series cab, if you have any.
Thanks |

central - east central Minnesota - | I don't recall the '06 or '56 series cabs, but do remember the great whoopla with the roll out of the '66 series. The cab was all tarped off like a silhouette - sat on dealers lot for what seemed like a few months before the unvailing . . . wasn't all that good of a cab, as compared to the JD sound guard. How does this rambling tie into your post? Well, I recall the rumbleings about the crappy cab on the '06-'56 and this was supposed to blow it away . . . . I wasn't impressed and I was only about 9 yrs old or so . .. .

Washington, Kansas & Lincoln, Nebraska | That was an Allen cab. Dad had a 656 with one on it. I don't have digital pictures of it, but do have some old photos. |

West Central, IL | Here is a pic of my tractor 806 wheatland with a factor cab. They call them Icecream box cabs.

Central Kansas | I put that style of cab on a 656 in 1968'. It was red in color and was an "Excel" brand, made in Hesston, Kansas. I would guess they made the OEM cab that's pictured in your photo. I agree, it was just a cab...............no AC or heat (had plenty of that in the summer) |

Central Kansas | That's the one I was thinking of. Reminds me of a refrigerator box |

Central Kansas | Larry, a straight sided cab on a 656?.............don't think I ever seen one. |

Central Iowa | Those "ice cream box" cabs became available for the 06 series tractors in 1965. They were available through 1969 on the 56 series tractors also.
They were replaced by the non-ROPS "diamond" cab in 1969 when the 826, 1026 and 1456 tractors were released.
These cabs seem rather primitive by today's standards, but were a lot more comfortable than a Windbreaker or Heat Houser. |

Central Kansas | I had a red cab and white cab 1066 and 966 in the 70's. Had a chance to use a JD with the "sound guard body" and was very impressed with the difference. Also had 2 86' series with OEM cabs. they were MUCH better but did not like the doors hinged the way they were. After they left the farm, went to JD. |

Washington, Kansas & Lincoln, Nebraska | I'll hafta get a pic of her digitized. Dad bought his first diesel in 1969. A new carry over 656. The dealer had a takeoff cab and a take off IH wide front from something. Dad had dealer switch narrow front to wide and install the Allen cab. I think that photo album is at the Lincoln house or I'd get it now.
Course I could go take a pic of the old wreck. After dad quit using it, my brother took it over and let it go to pot. They took the hoods off for some reason and never bothered to put them back on, etc. Dad had caught it on fire in 1995. I rebuilt and repainted it then, but one sure can't tell it now. |

Central Kansas | Yes, I'll agree with you. Still didn't like the doors the way they were hinged..........knocked you into the dirty tire when it was windy. |

| I have an Allen cab on a 9600. Rear visibility absolutely stinks compared to the Hiniker 1300 cab mentioned by Tommy below. Steps are also poor.
My 8600 has a Hiniker 1300 cab which has good visibility and good steps. Although the heater in the Allen cab does work where the heater in the Hiniker doesn't.
Neither of mine has AC but the Hiniker cab really opens up nice for summer. The side windows don't open on the Allen cab. |

So Illinois | And that was only one of the things wrong with that tractor.
1. Rough riding sob
2. Hard shifting , tall gear shift lever that was in your way to exit cab.
3. Stupid little short hyd levers
4. Uncomfortable to use TA and throttle.
5. Did I say rough riding sob
It got to the point our 1486 just sat around because nobody would drive it. Was not a sad day when it left for sure. |

Oswald No-Till Farm Cleghorn, IA | I am thinking that the factory diamond cab in the late 1960's before the "66" big cab came out was a Hinson cab. Most of the cabs by Year-Around and Hiniker were diamond cabs as well. Never heard of Excel... 'till now. |

Central Kansas | I live 50 miles from where the Excel was built. I think all they make now are riding lawn mowers. |

Elizabethtown,KY | As an earlier poster mentioned my dad had a '75 1066 with the factory red cab with white roof and '74 4430 with Soundgard at the same time, he didn't like to drive the 1066 at all so I got stuck with it, doors fit poorly and man was it loud, we had a chrome 4' stack on it, I think that is much of what caused my ringing ears! It was stronger than the 4430 but I sure enjoyed driving the 44 a whole lot more. |

WCIN | I always thought the (66) series cabs were made by McGlaughlin. This ring a bell with anyone? |
