Subject: What size wire and breaker do I need? Plasma Cutter

NESD
I just bought a Hypertherm Powermax 45 plasma cutter, wondering what size wire and breaker do I need? Length would be approx. 10 feet.
Here are the specs.
Input Voltages
(± 10%) CSA
CE 200 – 240 V, 1-PH, 50-60 Hz
230 V, 1-PH, 50-60 Hz
400 V, 3-PH, 50-60 Hz
Input Current @5.95 kW CSA

CE 200/230 V, 1-PH, 34/28 A
230 V, 1-PH, 30 A
380/400 V, 3-PH, 10.5/10 A
Output current 20 - 45 A
Rated output voltage 132 VDC

Thanks for your help!!

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
We just use the same type outlet as the welder. I would go with a 50 amp breaker. The size wire depends a little on how far away the outlet is from the panel.

I have a Cutmaster 102 which is a 1 3/4" in machine. It operates at max power 97 amps. I didnt even give it a thought when I bought it, could hardly cut anything with out tripping the 50 amp welder circuit. Put in a 100 amp breaker on that outlet, no trouble. It looks like yours will draw around 45-47 amps, you should be able to get by with a 50 amp breaker

I have the same unit and replaced the plug to match my welder. 50 amp breaker and 6 gauge wire if I remember correctly.
Really like mine but it blew up under warranty with less than an hour of cutting time. Repair center said not uncommon, they either blow quick or last forever. Repair and they work good after as well.
I hope.

SW Ohio
Depends on the input voltage you select. At 230 VAC single phase 5.95 KW calls for a good 10 gauge wire. However the book for that machine recommends a 35 or 50 amp slow blow fuse. 50 amp if the plug is already on it. Don't use wire of a lower rating than the fuse... which will be more than 10 depending on the insulation of the wire. Usually 8 for 40 amps and 6 for 60 amps.

Good Luck,
Dave

Yea took it out of the box, expected something much larger. Can't believe how good they work, hardly ever use the torch anymore.

Near-north Ontario, French River
Once you get your wiring finished up, make sure you have good clean air to supply the plasma. Clean DRY air makes a world of difference in cut quality as well as consumables life.
