shredders? I thought the 120 was an older model, but found some newer ones on tractorhouse.

Gene,
I thought the difference in the 120 and 220 was 120 is drawn and 220 is 3pt. If I'm not mistaken the 520 is supposed to be more heavy duty, so to speak, than the other models. We owned a 220 at one time, it was a good shredder until Dad decided to start shredding CRP. Not quite the same after that. I have a Rhino RC20, haven't had a minutes trouble with it 4 years. Only paid 7K for it and it had only been over 200 acres. Seems lots of flails get traded in with few acres. I like the indirect flails better than direct. Less chance for the gearbox to get torn up.

We have a 220 that is drag type. The 3 pt. was an option. We leased a rhino last year, did a good job, but where the flat metal is welded on the back where the hyd. cyl. hooks up started tearing loose. Didn't know if this was a fluke or what. Explain the indirect vs. direct flails.

We had a 220 3 point at one time. Nightmare!!!

When it was new it was ok. But after it covered some acres it started giving trouble. Then it was put into CRP ground and it was very short lived then. Couldn't keep bearings in it and those center ones are some fun to change!!

220 was the first high speed shredder Deere came out with and the 520 is the new model. 120 is the older lower drum speed version.
Just looked on deeres site 120 has 106 mph tip speed and the 520 is 139 mph.
I like our 520 it does a better job of sucking up trampled down material than the alloway we had previous.
Also looks like the 120 is still available from deere new

Alloways, the drum is hooked directly to the center gearbox. Indirect use a drive shaft to run down to a belt that turns the drums. What cylinder are you referring to the gauge wheel adjustment? If so we have to run a disk on our wheel tracks or we destroy everything. Mine is a 3pt.

Woods I believe is just the old Alloway with some new improvements. I think the 20's are ok but most people have traded the 28 ft for Rhino. He's one dealer in my area.  http://www.equipmentlocator.com/remarket/dealers/defaultsearchresul...

Yea the cylinder in the center in the back. There is a piece of flat metal that is curved to the shape of the shredder and welded on. This was on a drag type.

Mine 3pt but I haven't had that yet. Neighbor has a earlier model, that the spindles are too small and it pulls the threads off the spindle. We have 3pt so maybe the pivot tracks won't destroy the frame. Try to keep part of the weight on the tractor How big was the one you used last year and how big are you looking for?

If you looking for a 20 foot this might worth looking into. Look under field equipment.  http://www.southwestauction.com/

It was a 20 ft. We also run an offset disc on the pivot tracks, helped a lot, but the deeper ones you can still feel. I have wondered about the 3-pt and think I would like to try one of them. It still has the gauge wheels doen't it? We need at least a 20 ft.

been looking at shredders here also,, here what i've found
120 slower rotor speed smaller bearings and d ring mounting on knives pull type only
220 higher rotor speed bigger bearings and direct mount knives- pull type or mount
520 is the new numbered 220
woods alloway are bit cheaper price wise around here, couple neighbors run semi mount 20' and have said good things about them..
also found out from JD dealer all deere shredders are now built in good ole mexico....
we kinda stumped on which one we're gonna order, really like the loftness, heard good things about alloway/woods and our deere has served us very well.

I have a woods 25' shredder three point, weighs about 5800# ,tip speed of 133 mph. Four years old,I have replaced the couplers that bolt to the drum and are splined to the gearbox, I was getting a lot of vibration and this fixed it, overall a pretty good shredder

Were ya'll running them in corn stalks? Just wondered how well they chop them up. The 220 does a pretty good job.

I"m the odd ball around here with the 20 ft Rhino, most are 25 ft. Mine has gauge wheels just like a drag.
