Looking at 6-13 Black Machine with flat fold markers and middle flex with Kinze units. What is the good and bad of these planters? Looks extremely well built.

Thanks Steve

we have one use it mostly for 15" beans, work ok for us, it's kind of a pain to load and work one with the units behind each other like they are but plants good, now ya know the flex frame does not work when it's folded in for narrow rows right? all and all it works for us and not a lot of money invested. bad; like all 7000 type planters, closing wheel, press wheel, and gauge wheels like to eat bearings but thats nothing new to anyone that has or had one. TOO WIDE. they are 17.5 feet wide. we had one, the roads we travel are busy 2 lane roads, for an area where the roads are not an issue they are great. folding is simple, markers are stronger than the markers on our 16 row, never had any problems out of it, ours was a 12/13 with white units. the flex only works with 30 inch rows, not on the 15 inch row mode. we pulled our machine with a 2wd 4250 john deere for 2 years, no trouble.

They have their place. Mine allowed me to have one piece of equipment instead of 2 but that means planting one crop at a time.
Frame is built heavy but kind of crude. Filling boxes when folded can be a challenge as was stated before.
Changing from 30" to 15" setup takes some time and is hard to do alone.
Having to get off the tractor to fold and unfold can be a problem for some.

good luck

Wheel bearings are too small for the weight of the machine

Southern IL.
I have a Black Machine with Flex frame, flat fold markers, and contact drive wheels. This planter has a population monitor it also has Case IH row units and cyclo box central fill. Great bean planter. Will no-till unbelievably without coulters. If interested let me know.

Very good planters, but going from a 30' swath in corn to 16.25' in beans is harsh. Mine turned blue and says Kinze on the side. As stated above takes some time to change from corn to beans and transport width at 17.5' are negatives, but they are getting cheap. Lots of planter for the money and will plant as good as a new one if kept in condition! Craig

Frame is weak in the middle. Several that I know of have broken in the middle. Of course they don't break in the winter when you can repair them, they break right in the middle of planting season. There aren't any around here anymore.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yes I misstated it is a 12-13. I would continue to drill my beans but it extra help presented itself I could plant beans with both. CW IL did you mean it is harsh because going down to such a small swath? Illini where about is the frame weak? Compared to my late 70's 7000 series JD this thing looks like it could withstand about anything. Redfarmer my email is in my profile.

Somethings you just have to watch: bearings in the seed transmission, have an extra contact tire and tubes on hand, keep wheel bearings adjusted and greased, good markers but watch for broken welds and cracks, mines leaking hydrolic oil out of valve box but can't find leak. Once in awhile it doesn't lift evenly across the bar. Mine also settles on the right side. It's not super convenent but it works for my 700 acres. My biggest complaint is the negative tongue weight when raised and folded for beans. I run a dualed 2wd and get stuck once in awhile. If it's been cared for and you are willing to love it, go for it.

I never had transmission tire problems until the last couple of years. Seems no one makes good quality tires any more. Some just leak out the side walls. Have you found something that works?

thanks
