SW Missouri | I'm thinking of buying a better truck and was wondering what years of the C 15 /3406E engines are the best. Don't want one with all the emissions crap on it. I'm wanting to spend a little more on a better, lower mile truck instead of just what I can find cheap and want to get it right. Plan on keeping truck a while.

Itta Bena Mississippi | 2002 down. 6NZ engine designation. The MBN isthe "bridge" engine before the Acert. It's better than the Acert IMO, but worse on fuel than a 6NZ. The cam, injectors and computer in the MBN can be swapped with 6NZ numbers. That swap will pay for itself in fuel if yiu run enough miles yearly. Tom

west central illinois | The only problem with those engines was their was a bulletin on the crankshafts I believe the years were 98 thru 2000 they had a bad batch of crankshafts and were failing I had the luck of breaking 2 in the same truck last one the engine only had 40000 miles on it the first one had 800000 if you have them run the serial number thru cat and see if it has ever been changed

The Breakfast Club | Look for the 6NZ-C15. I believe somewhere in the late 'E' models, the block was beefed up considerably, most noteworthy was the removal of the cam tunnel. Some of the early 'E' models had issues with the block cracking near the oil cooler.

Iowa | I don't have that much to add, I do like the 2000-2001 C-15 engine (6NZ= Serial number Prefix). It isn't a perfect engine, but it is around 180 lbs lighter than 3406E, has huge improvements in the oil seepage/leakage problems at the front and rear cover areas(over the 3406E) In Fact; I have never seen a rear cover(flywheel housing/bellhousing) oil leak on these. [This was a big deal, to any CAT mechanic, that was sooooo tried of repairing oil leaks/seepages on 3406E] Now, the C-15 didn't seen to hold head gaskets, as well as the 3406E, but CAT has came out with new and improved head gaskets for this issue. So far, so good, but those gaskets probably don't have 500,000-700,000 miles on them yet, thus the verdict is still out.[NOTE: the 3406E models did really well on head gaskets, in my opinion] Why the difference? IMO: CAT started machining expansion cuts, between cylinders, on the cylinder head "bottom deck" of a C-15 engine, thus the gasket lost some clamping force in those areas(in-between-cylinders/liners) But I'll take a C-15(6NZ) anyday, and If you don't mind some oil seepage, than the 3406E "1LW" and "2WS" prefixes have been really good. (I just don't like oil seepage/leaks!!!) Edited by CATGUY 12/6/2010 22:07

SW Iowa | I agree with these guys, I'd stay away from a "bridge" engine. Never seemed to run as good as an old C15. I don't need one, but a C16 would be killer to have at 600 hp. Michael

Iowa | The C-15 "bridge" engine(MBN) has "smart" wastegate system, but also has DOC(diesel oxidation catalyst) in the OEM muffler, thus more exhaust backpressure. I've read on the web, that some guys have replaced that OEM (DOC) muffler, with a std muffler and got up to .4 MPG increase=less exh. backpressure. I know if I owned one of those, I too, would change the muffler for that kind of increase. This was the last of the "single turbo" CAT C-15 engines.
