Bought a Fella rotary hay rake last year and it sure seems like the grease zerks are smaller than all of the rest of our grease zerks. Can't seem to keep the grease gun tip on the zerks, especially under pressure. Comparing the zerks to others, it seems smaller. Am I seeing things or is it true these zerks are different? What are the options if they are different? New fitting for the grease gun or replace all the zerks? I'm pretty sure the rake is from Germany.

There are Metric grease zerks. Seems they come in sizes like M6, M8 and M10. More good news.

Found a lot of info and sources for grease zerks that have metric threads (m6, m8, & m10), but those same sources bill the guns as one size fits all. My first reaction would be to replace the zerks, or a couple of them with new ones. See if your gun stays on the new zerks any better. I have heard some noise about cheap zerks being made of soft steel and then not keeping a good seal when the gun is attached. That may be the case with what you have. Let me know what you end up finding out.

I would replace them with fittings that look like they have the same size head. Regular fittings with (likely) metric threads are available, perhaps the usual source like grainger.

We went through the same thing last year. Replaced some zerks and had trouble getting the tip to stay on. We changed tips on the guns and still we wasted lots of grease. Finally got the calipers out and started measuring and found the whole batch of new zerks that we had bought (one of those kits with multiple thread sizes and head angles) had heads that were quite a bit smaller than our old zerks. Went to a local high quality ( and expensive) hardware supplier and asked for one of their kits to compare with and it contained the appropriate size heads and we had no more problems.

Germany
correct - the head where the grease gun comes on is one standard around the world. Probably Fella bought a charge of cheap grease zerks :-(

I bought a new articulated loader last year and had to replace half the grease fittings the first time I greased it. I replaced the rest at the next greasing. All fittings were metric.

i though the heads were the same and the threads differ

thought you could get 1/8 pipe/npt/bspt, and then the metrics, M6 M8 and M10 taper fittings

taper metric fittings i have come across.......found a hyd banjo fitting with a male metric taper fitting with a 30 degree seat, not common in my books, metric hyd fittings work a little different to this one, ended up welding the hose tail on to a lifesaver and crimping it to the hose to get around that dilema

i like the metric Light style of hydraulic fittings, great when working with steel pipe

on the grease nipples (zerks in america) the thread maybe metric, but i thought the nipple was the same. should ask my father tommorrow, i think he owns a fella swather now...how many jaws you grease gun end have??

I know they use to be the same size heads but now?
When we first came here we brought a lot of our equipment from Holland. European made equipment with nothing but metric everything. Never had any trouble with metric grease zerks and American grease guns or the other way around.

Have found out that the grease gun tip can vary a lot in quality between brands.
If you can find tips with four jaws they sure seem a lot better.

Like others have said, there are cheap grease zerks. I've got a New Holland 154 wheel rake that has small nipples on its zerks. I understand it was built in Italy. I really have to work to get the grease in the zerks. Guess I should go at it and replace these with decent zerks.

Bought a Lexion combine last year and couldn't grease it. My Lexion dealer got me a metric coupler for my grease gun. Works fine. It fits all standard nipples a bit tighter so the old nipples even take grease a bit cleaner.

get you a metric tip that works.  Mine has rubber in the tip instead of metal.
