NE Saskatchewan | We are looking at trading our wheel tractors off for tractors with tracks for next year - extremely wet conditions. We have quotes from both Deere and Case - both are very comparable for price.
Around here (NE SK) there are only a few JD track units, but lots of quad's. Deere hasn't been promoting their track units, this year was the first year they even had one for demo (then they sold it a week after its arrival - how smart is that?)
We have some wet spots we drive around in the field, how much of a problem is that for the two track system compared to the quad? Anyone have both on their operations - pro's / con's for each?

| Been trying to chisel in wet conditions for the last few days, the autosteer doesn't work and the track slips if you put the plow too far into the ground. The result was the same in either a CAT 865C or a 9630T. |

Manitoba, Canada | dont have either of them, but in the same boat and looking. Demoed both this fall. THe deere had a new aftermarket hydraulic swing drawbar, which im thinking would be a must. But why buy a tractor add a bunch of aftermarket sh!t, tie up one scv just to be able to KINDA do what the quad trac could already do no problem to begin with. It sounds like your area is similar to here, i think there is a reason there arnt many around. Oh and the 48gpm hydraulic pump on the JD tracks is nothing short of a embarassment. its 2011 afterall |

| Who is offering/building that hydraulic swing drawbar? |
| |
Manitoba, Canada | i cant remember the name, ill try and come up with it. I thought it was an american company. It was 2 hydraulic cylinders that bolted to the drawbar which allowed it to swing around like the cat setup.
I was using the tractor to pull a salford coulter. The guy who run the tractor with the hydraulic drawbar says he leaves the scv in float all the time. But when i was pulling the salford the hitch would constantly swing from side to side, and if its anything like that when seeding, it would be no good at all. Im guessing if you had it you would probibally just put it into float if you were in a spot you shouldnt be and need a last resort to get outa dodge. $6-7000 seems a bit steep for a panic button as far as im concerned. |

WC MN | Was deep ripping with a 535Q while it was raining for 24 hours at 9" deep with a DMI with 3% slip I would say that it works pretty good. I'm a JD guy buy I love my quads. |

| I was waiting for you to show up! |

Manitoba, Canada | hydraulic swing drawbar |
| |
SE South Dakota/ SW Minnesota | Dont expect rtk to work very good after you go through a mud hole and get the tracks all muddy and wet with the deere. I learned that the hard way with our8430T. |
| |
WC MN | lol |
| |

| I will not count out a Quad for next year, the 865 and the 9630 were just big enough for what we were doing, not sure they would also handle a 450 bu cart and nh3. I would like to try a 875 and a 600 quad next year. |
| |
WC MN | lol smooth u get done what you wanted before this bliss? |
| |
WC MN | I bet a 550 would be big enough, I can't believe how the 535s purrrr along |
| |

| Finished harvesting and tilling bean ground on Monday evening, only have about 250 acres of corn ground we would like to till but can no till it is we have to. You? |

N.W. Illinois | Nevin side note: ordered a Maxflow anhydrous system (from Max-Quip). If it doesn't work I'm holding you responsible. I'm thinking a box of Cuban cigars would probably be fair. ;)

U seen this |

Northern Illinois | We are green. But Deere should just pay Case a patent infingment and build a quad. We had slip and slide, Quad only way to go. we have a 535 & a 530. |
| |
Portland, ND | The hydraulic drawbar would be nice, I made a simple one for my 9520T, but it needs a little more tuning.
If you are driving around mud, the quad is better. I tried both, and liked the ride of the Deere better, on the road, and doing high speed fieldwork--rock rolling, vert tillage, etc. |
| |
Rivers, MB | We bought a 375 quad this spring just after seeding. It will pull our drill in spring and grain cart in fall. We ran it on the cart this fall and I was very impressed. The ride in the field is noticeably better than the 9180 w/ 650 metric duals that it replaced. It just seems to float across the field. When harrowing, the ride is substantially better than our other 4WD w/ tires because at the higher speeds (around 10mph), the tracks just glide over the rougher spots. The only place where the ride is a bit rougher is on the road but even that is far better than what i was expecting.
Anyone that i have talked to with the 2 track system that farms around potholes says that once you start to get sucked into the side of the wet spot, you're done. Either get another tractor or steer into the middle of it and hope to get through. Fine if you are pulling a scraper empty but not so good when pulling a drill in spring time.
I like the AMS side of the green stuff far more than anything that case offers. We have put a JD ATU into our stx because most of our other equipment is green. If JD offered an articulated track machine, we would have gone green. |

WC MN | done with corn got about 60 ac left of unworked corn stalks that I'll get after a freeze hopefully I get a chance to get my bander out yet this fall |
| |
Manitoba, Canada | haha ok fair enough! Are you running the Max-Quip on an air drill or fall app? What area do you farm in? I have had good luck talking to Lance in saskatoon, hes pretty knowledgable. As well, Cameron Stewart in calgary has been very good to deal with. They are pretty willing to make the system work. How many sections did you go? |
| |
Hancock county, Illinois | We have ran both. No question go with the Quad. Biggest downfall is the arguments over who gets to run our 535 Quad. One side note if looking at 485, investigate 535. We have a 485 wheel tractor and not a real big fan of that engine. Have a 425 and 450 wheel tractors with 15 litre cummins and they both out perform 12.9 in 485. Both Case IH and Cummins out of Bloomington have been here and can not find anything wrong with it. The 535 will be more $$$ but I think 535 will pay you back in the long run. |
| |
| agree with 8991 on the engine. have a 485 wheel machine and its doggy. like the old 425 with the cummins better |

N.W. Illinois | I farm in Northern Illinois. It will be put on a 2510H John Deere Anhydrous Applicator http://www.deere.com/en_US/ProductCatalog/FR/category/FR_NUTRIENT_A... for fall use. These applicators are becoming very popular in the states. It can be used as a pull type in the fall and spring or 3 pt. mounted for sidedressing on standing corn. John Deere copied the idea from Yetter manufacturing http://www.yetterco.com/prod_p_2987nh3magnumfertilizercoulter.php but made several improvements. They are both high speed units with high volume p/ac N apps. We will be running 2 manifolds with shutoffs. The Maxflow should be a perfect fit for us.
The tanks we use are 1500 gal and are refilled at the fert dealer. No bottom feed and 1 1/4" hose so it was recommended to go with a heat exchanger to get the extra flow we need. Also we will run 11/64" flow lines instead of 1/8" because of the high flow in 30" spacing.
I've talked with Cameron(President of a company returning calls to a farmer,go figure)and he has been very informative and a pleasure to talk to. I am looking forward to getting the unit up and running. |

| If you go with a Quad make sure it has the Camoplast tracks on it. Night and day difference in ride going down the road compared to the Goodyear tracks. |
| |
South Central Manitoba | The only reason John Deere can sell their track tractor is because it says John Deere on the side. Quads just make more sense - especially in wet conditions and thats what tracks are all about right? |
| |
Leeds, North Dakota | lots of positive with a quad, look at my posts, got lots around here, scott. |
| |
SE ND | Unpin the drawbar on the cat and let it swing, that helps steering a whole bunch when its wet. Hydraulic drawbar is suppose to work real good but I've never used one. |
| |
Manitoba, Canada | all the best! |
