i am going to get a new chisel plow. john deere cannot get till march of 2011 and case can get in a week maybe. have a case ih 385 horsepower. thinking of a 33/35 ft. is this to big. neighbors have a 29 footer with a john deere 425 horsepower tractor. do not know what to do. case chisel plow has a lot of moving parts and frame pivots in like 5 places. john deer is rigid. which one to go with

Minnesota
We have a JD 2410 chisel plow with the floating hitch. It is the ONLY green piece of equipment we own, so we didn't buy it because it's green. It's a really good machine...it doesn't bounce and it stays in the ground. HOWEVER, it has very few grease points and a lot of cast parts -- so longevity is questionable.

Our neighbors have a new CIH chisel plow. They are happy with it and it looks like a good machine.

If you need it this fall, March 2011 isn't going to do much good.

PS -- we have 360 hp on 24 feet and can run out of power in our conditions.

I don't know about where you are but we are pulling a 2410 with 30 tru-depth shanks on 12" centers and 3" concave twists pulling 8" deep and it's all a 9630T (530 hp) wants.
THe tru-depth shanks staw where you want them.

Slicker than a Yes album.
What kind of shanks are you looking at? That will depend on how fast you want to go. Like Smoothlander said, the Tru Depths will make things tough to pull. Most 33'plows here are behind 475hp tractors. Lot of them are setup to run anhydrous for one pass in bean stubble.

If you want the chisel plow to stay in the ground and not hop, then John Deere tru-depth standard shanks are the only shanks on the market that will accomplish the task. NO other brand has similar down pressure/trip rating as a John Deere tru-depth shank.

I know you said case ih or john deere, but Sunflower makes a very good chisel also. Lots of green guys in my area, are now sunflower operators.

Are you sure you are only going 8" deep? We're pulling a 41' 610 with 2" spikes on our 9400 but we are down to 5 mph and less in places with it going 7-8" deep. Did some headlands and it maintained 6"+ where many trucks have gone through. I do know our 9400 will pull more than a 9420 will after this summer. Good for the fuel man, but those black fields are sure going to be nice when we hit them with the finisher come spring. Only problem is dad signed some up for the CSP so limited on where we can go with it to some extent.

if i'm not mistaken, a cnh chisel plow is made by flexi coil, and those are garbage.

Whats the clearance on the case? I run a JD 2410 high clearance model which has 32 inches. Really goes through a lot of trash. 43 ft behind a JD 9630. Wouldn't want any less power this year.

the case is probably better because it is easier on the frame will the moving parts.

What trouble have you heard of with a CNH (FlexiCoil) chisel? What models?

I believe that the CaseIH is the same as a Flexi 820, which have amazing ground following and reasonably low maintenance. Long term, would you rather replace some pin-joint parts, or have "semi-annual welding afternoon" like we used to on rigid frame Morris'....

have an 820. it's junk. constantly welding on the frame, replacing pins, bolts and bushings. at one point a wing broke right off while unfolding. and if you fold or unfold without the machine all the way up you will trash it. it happens alot. they are a cheaper machine and there's a reason why.
