Anybody used a DMI 527? Looking at one with the disc leveler on the back, not going to use it on all my stalk ground but want to open up some of my ground that got pounded the worst this year. Missed out on the 510 I posted about yesterday.

i run a 527B with a heavy 5 bar on the back. i like the tool. it does
a good level job. the harrow is kind of a joke, though. i would think
a disc leveler would work better. keep in mind the 527 isn't built like
a 530. it's made for lower hp tractors. i pull mine with a 7240 mfwd.
it has definitely helped my compacted areas. i've had it for years and
have never broken anything but shear bolts.

one more thing. use the original dmi 7" points. i fell for
the deere laser point sales pitch once. they are a joke.
wouldn't stay in the ground.

Here's a couple of pics of the 527 in question.

those levelers look like nh3 disc sealers. doubt they'll do
much on the ends where the big chunks come up. that's what
winter is for anyway. good looking unit. i like the hydraulic
gang adjustment. you can raise it clear up where residue isn't
a problem (ends of bean fields). i'm not sure those are auto resets.
just spring loaded shanks? shear bolt towards the bottom of the
shank mount? 5/8" maybe? not sure.

We have one identical to the one in the picture. It's actually our second one. First one had the tine leveler bar in the back, traded it for one with the disc levelers.

No, they are not like NH3 sealers...they do a really nice job of leveling if they are set right...ours has the hydraulic adjust leveler bar in the back...and they work good in high trash situations.

The shanks are spring loaded trip shanks, but they also have 5/8" shear bolts at the back end of the horizontal beam where the vertical shank bolts on. The shank springs will let the whole bean come up over rocks, but if they catch under a rock that won't move or let the shank come up, they shear. I keep a few in the tractor, but usually only break two or three a year.

We pull ours with a Cat Challenger 75. Really should have a 530 for that size tractor, but it pulls it so much nicer at 12" than a MFWD will.

We had a 527 a few years back. Originally had a MacFarlene heavy duy spike harrow on the back that did a nice job of leveling. When we bought a 530B with disc leveler also we purchased a disc leveler for the 527 so they would leave the ground the same. IMO the harrow was better. I agree with packerfan, for some reason that doesn't look like a DMI disc leveler that came with them but it's been a few years since we owned it so I might be wrong about that.

Biggest problem we had with our 527 was shearing the bolt where the shank arm (not the shank shear bolt) bolted to the main frame mounting bracket. Didn't have too much problems when we were pulling it with an mfd tractor but when we put it behind the CIH 9230 we had at the time we would break several every day. Have broken as many as 9 or 10 in a day and usually at least 4 or 5. The 527B used a steel pin instead of a bolt. I'd look for a 527B.

They have a 527B on hand also but they are asking almost double for it compared to the 527. If I could afford the B I would buy it but not with this short crop.

Other than breaking that bolt we liked the job our 527 did. Actually, with the 27" shank spacing it didn't throw as big of dirt chunks as our 530Bs or 730B did. Besides the 9230, we pulled our 527 with a Magnum 7240, JD 8310, & a MX 240. Of the last three tractors the 7240 handled it the best. IIRC the bolts we had problems with was a 3/4" x 7 3/4" grade 5. If you buy the 527 you might want to pick up a few extra to throw in the tool box just in case. Don't use a 7 1/2" bolt as that puts the threads where the shear point is. If you can't get 7 3/4" use an 8" & flat washers. Also, we tried using grade 8s & that didn't help, they actually broke quicker than the gr 5s

Check the disk levelers for side to side play.  As they get some age on them the pivot hole will get egged out and allow the leveler's to slop around enough that they won't work very good.  A few years ago we borrowed a neighbor's 530B and they were getting worn enough that they lost some of the leveler's so I took them apart and cut some 2x2x1/2" plate with the right sized hole drilled in them and welded them on each side over the egged out holes which along with new longer bolts and new bushings got them a few thousand more acres out of it before they had to be replaced.

My brother just tried to buy a very clean 527B on an auction- he was thinking 12K- it went for $16,100. I think this spike in corn prices has helped push some before harvest purchases.

Well the 527 got sold yesterday so I asked what the bottom dollar was on the 527B even though it was more than I wanted to spend and they chopped it almost $2000 on an outright deal so I pulled the trigger on it since every other ripper I was interested in and called about within 120 miles sold Saturday or yesterday.

Have had a 527 since they first came out. Haven't worn it out yet(except for points and shear bolts). If you adjust the disc leveler properly, it will do a fairly level job. Pull it with a JD 4650 MFWD.
