Subject: John Deere 9870 vs. Case 8120

SW Manitoba.
We are currently all john Deere equipment. We run 3 JD 9870 machines with 635 drapers and 615 pickups. In the past we have always said that green paint was the best. However, we are more and more disappointed with green paint in terms of design (poor feed accelerator design casues plugging and smoked belts), too much technology with alarms and computers and not enough simplicity. On, the other hand, I know Red paint isn't flawless, and they comes with their problems too. We have both a Case and JD dealer close to us and both offer excellent service and parts.

We like the Case for the ability to reverse the rotor, the ease in changing concaves, and we like the Macdon draper headers.
On the deere, we like the JD gps, hands down its probably the best. and we have gottin comfortable with these machines, and they are pretty reliable.

So, not to start a war here, but I want to here from those who run both Case (7120, 8120, or 9120) or John Deere (9670,9770 or 9870). What do you like about each of them, what don't you like, and why would you stick with/buy one or the other.

Keeping in mind cost of ownership (depreciation per hour), reliability, capacity, fuel economy, thrashing job (good or bad sample), comfort, gps capability etc.

Had a neighbor demo an 8120for a day or 2, then same thing with 9870. His 2 biggest complaints on the IH were slow unloading speed (their auger is smaller diameter) and lack of engine power. He also said engine was slow to recover when pulled down. He ended up buying a used 9770.
I've heard good things about the MacDon head, (better than JD's new draper) they can certainly be put on a JD combine.
I do hear some complaints about the "computer controls" on the JD 70 series (not real operator-friendly).
Where we live, the JD dealer has better parts and service, hands down.

Here's a link to a past thread. This isn't as in-depth as you're looking for, probably, but it's what I and another guy garnered from a short time of running both machines.

We have run Deere forever and had 9870s up until last year in corn and soybeans. Switched to 8120 mid last fall for the track system. 76x50 floaters were not cutting it in the extreme mud. One of the better moves we have made. Will never have a combine on the farm again without tracks. These combines and headers are so big now it seems to me like they should be standard on all class 8-9 combines.

As far as the machine goes I love how easy it is to get at everything on on the Case, shields come right off and you can look right in the back at the sieves. No more stupid tiny plastic door to look in or dinky electric jack to lift the whole chopper. Cab is also incredibly roomy and quiet on the Case. Head and shoulders better. I like the GPS system and cab electronics better on the Deere. I like more displays so i don't have to change home screens every time i want different information. And seriously Case...still no variety locator????? Lets get out of 07 and enter the modern era of GPS and the whole one display idea is ridiculous. Power was significantly better with the 9870. That 13.5 is a puller esp with the 612C hooked up and the 40 hp power boost. The unload auger was also a huge step backward on the Case. I believe it's three inches smaller than JD. How Case can rate it the same capacity is as farcical as anything I have ever seen. Both combines had plenty of rotor loss in light wet corn last fall but hopefully I can get that reduced this year with the better corn. That 40 ft flex draper on the Case is a dream to run. The ability to quickly change your angle on the cutterbar and shave the ground is excellent soybean saving technology. And we also have rocks so being able to pull it back as well when needed should be a machine saver. So this is the perspective of a corn-soy guy. Take it for what it's worth. As you can tell i think neither is the ultimate machine and if you combined them they would be pretty close to it. I'd like to try a Lexion because i think it would do a really a good job of saving corn from going out the back but all the neighbors who have had them say you better keep it new cause they have so many moving parts-bearings they will not stay in the field after 600 hrs. So who knows...maybe the auto greaser solved that problem on them. All in all i am pretty satisfied with the move to red...but i think they could do better.

We currently run a jd 9500 and over the summer have been shopping around for something a little bigger. The one thing I've noticed is that here in western Canada there are a lot more green combines on the red lots, than there are red combines on the green lots. Don't know why, just an observation.

always remember to have your engine set to power rise not boost. red ones will have bigger unloader before long. having a slow unloader is not much of a problem compared to when the 8010's first came out. enjoy your 8120's.

East Prairie, MO

I agree about the 1 display, just a tad busy wouldn't you say? I got the chance to run an 8120 with a 30' MacDon FD in RICE yesterday. I've never been in a combine cutting rice but a friend that runs 2 9770's and 2 9760's got the chance to demo the machine and I couldn't resist the chance to check it out. I'm all about Red combines and thought it had lots of good features, my favorite being that you can push a button while unloading to stop the floor augers in the bin to let the unloader clean out so you don't have to fold it up loaded if you need to, NICE! He commented that the Case was lots quieter than the Deere and he really liked it to the point he could see having them. He liked the ability to reverse the rotor as well and much simpler, you can stand at the back and see all the way to the front of the rotor, everything is easy to get to for sure.
