SW OH | What is the main difference between a C12 and C13 Cat engine? Thanks

| Main difference is Displacement. C13 is a big brother to a C12. I have heard issues with head gaskets on the c-13. The c-12 has had a reputation for head gaskets also. | |||

Iowa | C12 is simpler design and slightly smaller with only a single turbo. (no second turbo, no precooler, no VVAs[variable valve actuators], no bellows inbetween 2 turbos and/or precooler to crack and leak boost, no VVA solenoids to fail, no water divertor valve, no VVA oil pressure sensor to fail, less overall wiring) This is just for the pre-2007 C13 engines. You can triple those differences on the later 2007 and newer C13 engines.

![]() Caraway, AR | Not hijacking thread, but one quick question: I have a volvo w/3176B engine w/ water problems. Would a c12 be bolt in, plug in exchange......would the c12 have to come out of a volvo? Thanks, John

Iowa | I tried to find the special CAT instructions that talked about this. No luck, but I bet the parts guys have it somewhere. I do remember that at one time, CAT factory allowed an incentive program(thru parts) to allow customers to trade in a 3176 engine for a C12 Reman engine and the "core charge" was better. I believe it came with some instructions and necessary changes. Like wiring, mostly, I believe they offered an "adapter harness" back then, too.(may no longer be available) Other items to look at; are the position of the turbo verses your truck(exhaust manfold flange "tilt" differs on diff. trucks), and the rear engine bellhousing where the OEM mounts bolt to(are the flanges straight=flat up and down OR are they slightly angled = narrower at the top verses the bottom) I can't remember our shop doing any of these, so I am not totally familiar with everything about this swap. ![]() Caraway, AR | Before the swap thing: I'll check oil cooler, water pump, then pull the pan and pressure check liners. If its liners I probably look at the swap. Until then.........I'll harvest, drain pan every morning, and hope for the best. Thanks, John

Iowa | Well, if you have coolant in the oil pan on a 3176B, then the two most likely culprits are the water pump (and its weep hole is plugged) or the head gasket is failing (sometimes it fails towards the camshaft area and with the oil pan off, you see drips around the cam area.)
