Subject: any problems with Polaris Ranger 400

I bought a new Polaris Ranger 400 back in May. At about 45 hours we burnt a belt up. Was probably our fault...we ran in high range when we probably should have been running more in Low range. The belt shredded......we cleaned out the pieces we saw and put on a new belt....ran about 15-20 hours and started surging or jumping when we started to go. Took it to polaris dealer and they said the clutch had to be taken apart and cleaned and they had to replace the cluth buttons and a bushing that was gaulded up. They blamed all this on not running in low range and then the belt shredding....I can understand this to a point....The problem is, after we got it back we have been trying to run in proper range(low/high)., however, after about 7-10 hours use it is having same type problems as before.... Are these belt type systems know for having lots of problems or is this new size ranger having issues???? Any thoughts????

Are the pulley sheaves that the belt runs on clean and free of any burnt belt debris? Sometimes when belts cook and get warm and destroy themselves they burn small tidbits of rubber onto the pulley sheaves. Wonder if that is part of your problem.

Is there any possibility that you can remove them without dissassembling half the machine and buffing and polishing the sheaves clean?

Might be worth looking at.

You need to check your motor mounts and the alignment of clutches,  on a snowmobile, atv, or side x side there is very little chance of a belt lasting if the clutch has something wrong with the alignment.   The belts should last at least 2500 miles.  The worst thing to do is slip the primary clutch at take-off, like when trying to pull something.  Always make quick deliberate accelerations when pulling something really heavy as this makes the clutch grab and go without slipping and hour glassing the belt.  Once the belt has a burned spot you can almost count the days till it will detonate. Also make sure to check for wrapped cords from the belt in the clutch and on the engine PTO as they will eat out a engine seal and cause a list of way more expensive repairs.  There is no way the clutch bottons should have shown any kind of wear at all with that few of miles on it.  More likely that it was assembled wrong and the were shimmed too loose,  or even more likely too tight, not allowing the clutch to engage easily, thus wrecking "your" really expensive belt that isn't under warranty.  After readingyour post again I see it said 45 hrs, I thought it was 45 miles.  You could have quite a few miles at 45 hrs.

We have trouble with my 500 and dads 700 all the time. Dads has had a new clutch and prob 8 belts and it is a 2008. It does have over 700 hrs on it though. Just put a new belt on friday. We are fast now. Can change a belt in 10 min. My 500 has had 4 or 5 belts in 370 hrs. We finally put a stall kit in dads so it wont slip the belt on take off, it will just snap your neck. We think it helped a little. I know there are guys on here that will tell you they have had them for years and never changed the belt. We do use and abuse ours in the field though.

I have had 5 of the rangers that I spray with pulling a 200 gal sprayer, I have never had a belt or clutch problem. Had a neighbor that had 7500 miles on the last one he had when he died.
Another friend had put two belts on by 100 hours and found that the oil seal was leaking at the clutch letting oil get on the belt.
There has to be a reason for replacing belts and working on clutches like you have had to do.
