Southern Middle Tennessee | I bought a 1995 International 4700 truck with a 7 speed spicer transmission. Haven't ever been around a newer grain truck and just wondering how you guys shift the gears in this truck. Should I use the clutch or should I shift it like a semi? Thanks guys, I know this sounds like a dumb question to some of you... lol Edited by blueraid 8/25/2010 13:41

![]() Brazilton KS | Is it a syncronized transmission, or not? Syncros--->clutch no syncros--->no clutch

Fairbury, NE (Southeast) | We have one in a old Brig GMC. They are pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Have to hold the gearshift into the next shift gently and throttle up til engine matches tranny speed. Should slide in pretty easily. Repeat for the other gears. Practice practice!

SE Wisconsin | I assume you are talking about the Spicer 6 + 1 Trans? We have 4 of them in our towing fleet. They are synchro'd. You can shift them without a clutch once you are moving, or with the clutch if you prefer. Personally, I use the clutch. Other guys around the shop do not. We have over 800,000 miles between the 4 trucks and none of them have EVER had trans problems. I would call the 6 + 1 trans bullet proof.

Casey Illinois | I have a Spicer 6+1 in my 4700, I do like it most of the time. I bought it used, was a delivery type truck, at 100,000 had to totally rebuild it. Out in the field it is hard to shift from LL to 1st and then 2nd. On hard ground it works fine, maybe engine is not big enough in softer ground. Mechanic that worked on it, said never by a spicer, to hard to work on. All the synchronizers were out, bearing were shot. Seems to be fine now, like not having a 2 speed, pretty simple to operate

Southern Middle Tennessee | Farmer Dale - 8/25/2010 15:00 like not having a 2 speed, pretty simple to operate That's one of the main reasons I wanted one of these trucks. Shifting gears without the two speed rear will be alot easier. We've ran an old 1974 Dodge 600 with a gas engine the past couple of harvests. We are going to be in heaven this year compared to that old truck. Thanks for all the info. I'll just have to start driving it and see what feels the best.

Eastern North Carolina | Check the service manuals and be sure it has the correct oil in it... We had a 5 spd Spicer in a spreader truck that used 30wt. motor oil instead of regular 90 or 85/140 lube.

NW Washington | Seems there is more than one 7 speed tranny, some are syncro some are not and some sound they they are to be avoided. http://www.expeditersonline.com/forum/truck-talk/20944-spicer-7-spe...

![]() Brazilton KS | Hummm....those guys just told me that the C10 was "basically an electronic version of the 3306..." Here I thought I knew a little about Cat engines, and I never realized that. Now I have to figure out what parts of the C10 are like a 3306..... hummm...... Well, it looks like the fuel primer pump is the same..... And the oil filter..... Yep, that's it. I guess they are just alike after all. Wow!
